🧱 ① Constituent 정의 Phrase Structure ▼
Core Definition
A constituent is a word or a group of words that functions together as a single syntactic unit within a hierarchical structure.

Hierarchical Structure

Why constituency matters

It follows from the definition in (3) (a), that the sequence [D E] does not form a constituent, since although D and E are both dominated by C, they are not exhaustively dominated by C, because there is another node (=F) which is also dominated by C. By contrast, the sequence [D E F] does indeed form a constituent, since the nodes D, E, and F are exhaustively dominated by C: thus, the sequence [D E F] forms a constituent of type C.

Radford, A. (1988). Transformational Grammar: A First Course, p. 112.

[NP birds]와 [NP the birds near the pond]는 길이가 달라도 NP 자리에 올 수 있다. constituent는 “두 단어 이상”이라는 길이 조건으로 정의하지 않는다.

[S [NP The guide] [VP greeted [NP the visitors]]]

🔁 ② Substitution Test proform substitution ▼
Definition
If a string of words can be replaced by a single proform (pronoun, do so, there, then, etc.) without changing grammaticality, that string forms a constituent.
Proform 종류
NP → pronoun
he · she · it · they · this · that
VP → do so / do it
PP (locative) → there
장소 PP 대용
PP (temporal) → then
시간 PP 대용
VP substitution by do so
The students [VP read the journal in the library], and the visitors did so too. Hannah [VP wrote a letter quickly], and Liam did so as well. 분석 오류: did so가 [the journal in the library]만 대용한다는 설명. → Radford/TG의 분석에서 do so는 동사와 complement를 포함하는 단위를 대용한다.
do so: adjunct를 포함하거나 밖에 남기기같은 buy 구문에서 do so는 buy the map on Friday 전체 또는 buy the map만 대용할 수 있다. 둘째 경우 on Friday는 범위 밖에 남고 뒤 절에 on Sunday가 올 수 있다. Maya will … buy the map on Friday V + complement adjunct Leo will do so too. do so = buy the map on Friday on Friday까지 대용 범위에 포함된다. 02 Adjunct를 밖에 남김 Maya will … buy the map on Friday V + complement adjunct Leo will do so on Sunday. do so = buy the map
Radford/TG의 분석에서 do so는 동사(V)와 그 complement를 포함하는 단위를 대용한다.
Locative PP substitution by there
The cat slept [PP under the porch], and the dog slept there too. → there는 이 예문에서 [PP under the porch] 전체를 대용한다. PP가 constituent임을 입증.

The constituency tests discussed in Chapter 12 and this chapter should be applied with some care. I have already pointed out that not all the tests we discussed are equally reliable.

출처: Aarts, B. (2018). English Syntax and Argumentation, 5th ed., p. 240.

Nora greeted [the pilot with the blue scarf]. → Nora greeted [her].Nora greeted the her with the blue scarf.

I hope [the train arrives soon].I hope it.

I hope so는 가능하다.

Nora will [repair the bicycle], and Leo will [∅] too.

VP ellipsis에서는 생략된 repair the bicycle이 문맥에서 회복되고 auxiliary will은 남는다. do so라는 소리 있는 대용 표현과 ellipsis를 구분한다. do so의 범위는 위 도식처럼 complement를 포함하고 adjunct를 포함하거나 제외할 수 있다.

↔️ ③ Movement Test topicalization · preposing ▼
Definition
If a string of words can be moved together to a different position (e.g. fronted by topicalization, VP-fronting, or preposing), that string forms a constituent.
PP preposing
The students debated the issue [PP in the auditorium]. [PP In the auditorium], the students debated the issue. [in the], the students debated the issue auditorium. → PP
VP topicalization
Mira said she would [VP finish the report by Friday], and [VP finish the report by Friday] she did. Mira said she would [finish the report], and [finish] she would the report. → VP

Thus, with regard to movement, we can say that if we can move a certain string of words, it must be a constituent, but if we cannot move a string of words, that string is not necessarily not a constituent.

[…]

(73) *[About New York], nobody liked the books —.

[…]

However, the fact that leftward PP-Movement is not possible in this example should not immediately lead us to conclude that the PP is not a constituent.

출처: Aarts, B. (2018). English Syntax and Argumentation, 5th ed., §13.8, p. 240.

Context: Which notes will Mina read, the old ones or the new ones?[The new notes], Mina will read __.[The new], Mina will read __ notes.

Mina said she would [read the notes], and [read the notes] she would __. read만 옮기고 the notes를 남기는 결과와 비교한다.

➕ ④ Coordination Test like-category coordination ▼
Definition 18 22
In the ordinary coordination analysis used here, like categories can be joined by and, or, or but. Identify the actual conjuncts, including any unpronounced structure, before assigning their categories.
VP coordination
Tomas [VP read the article] and [VP wrote a summary]. Tomas read the article and wrote a summary에서 [the article and wrote]를 한 constituent로 묶기.
PP coordination
The witness worked [PP in the studio] and [PP in the garden]. The witness worked [in the studio] and [the garden].

(4) I am feeling thirsty.(5) Should I save my last cola till later?(6) [I am feeling thirsty] but [should I save my last cola till later]?

CP는 그 TP 바깥에 C(complementizer) 층을 더한 구조다. 원문 (3)의 that Mary likes poems에서는 that이 C이고 Mary likes poems가 그 안의 TP다.

[CP [C′ [C that] [TP Mary likes poems]]]CP와 TP는 경쟁하는 두 이름만이 아니다.

(1a) / (2a)[fond of a dog] and [afraid of a tiger]: AP + AP. 반면 *[like a dog] and [afraid of a tiger]는 PP + AP로 범주가 맞지 않는다. fond·afraid는 형용사 head이고 like는 이 비교에서 전치사다.
(1b) / (2b)[very slowly] and [very steadily]: AdvP + AdvP. *[slowly] and [the car]는 AdvP + NP/DP다.
(1c) / (2c)[a princess of Denmark] and [a prince of the United Kingdom]: NP/DP + NP/DP. *[a princess of Denmark] and [with long hair]는 NP/DP + PP다.
(1d)I think [CP that {[TP Mary likes poems] and [TP Susan ⟨likes⟩ novels]}].
(1e)I think [CP that Mary likes poems] and [CP that Susan likes novels].
(2d) / (2e)*I believe [TP Mary to be honest] and [CP that Susan is kind].는 TP + CP다. *I believe [CP that Mary is honest] and [TP Susan to be kind].

(1d)의 that은 두 TP를 품는 더 큰 CP의 C이고, (1e)의 that들은 각각의 CP 안에 있다.

(5)의 should는 조동사(auxiliary)다. 평서 어순 I should save …

[TP I [T should] save …] [CP [C′ [C shouldᵢ] [TP I [T tᵢ] save …]]]tᵢ는 should가 출발한 자리다.

(4) [CP [C′ [C ∅] [TP I am feeling thirsty]]](5) [CP [C′ [C shouldᵢ] [TP I tᵢ save my last cola till later]]](6) [CP …] but [CP …] →

The two sentences can be conjoined. Both are CPs: (4) has an empty C, while (5) has the inverted auxiliary should in C. They therefore satisfy the same-category requirement.

(a) [Mina can leave now] but [will she arrive on time]?(b) I think [that Mina can leave now] and [that Joon can stay].(c) I think that [Mina can leave now] and [Joon can stay].

(a)는 CP + CP다.

Nora gave [her brother a map] and [her sister a compass].

TG의 생략 분석에서는 [gave her brother a map] and [∅ her sister a compass]처럼 발음되지 않은 동사를 포함한 구조를 검토한다.

Clause Layers: finite·infinitival·small clause

Radford, A. (1988), Transformational Grammar: A First Course, §2.6과 §6.4, 특히 pp.300–301의 평서·의문 주절 연결. Aarts, B. (2018), English Syntax and Argumentation, 5th ed., §§12–13은 constituency 진단의 적용 범위를 보충한다.

✂️ ⑤ Fragment Answer & Cleft stand-alone test ▼
Fragment Answer Test
A string that can stand alone as a fragment answer to a wh-question is a constituent.
Q: Where did Olivia leave the keys? A: [PP On the kitchen counter]. A: [On the].
Cleft Construction Test
A string that can occupy the focus position of an it-cleft ("It is X that …") forms a constituent.
It was [PP at midnight] that the alarm sounded. It was [NP the new intern] who fixed the bug. It was [the new] who fixed intern the bug.

(76) *It was eat the pizza naked that Josh did.

[…]

The fact that (76) is bad is simply due to a general constraint which disallows strings involving verbs to be placed in the focus position in clefts (cf. also *It was eat that he did/*It was eat the pizza that he did.).

To conclude, when using constituency tests, it is imperative to bear in mind that some are more reliable than others, and that they only work in one direction.

출처: Aarts, B. (2018). English Syntax and Argumentation (5th ed.), pp.240–241.

Who will check the tickets? — [The guard].Who will check the tickets? — [The guard will ∅].

둘째 답에는 check the tickets라는 VP가 생략된 절이 있으므로 the guard will이라는 표면 문자열 자체가 별도 constituent임을 입증하지 않는다.

Nora repaired [the bicycle]. → It was [the bicycle] that Nora repaired.Nora [repaired the bicycle]. → What Nora did was [repair the bicycle].

VP를 검사하려면 what … did …

put off the decision → put the decision off는 두 어순의 대조이며, 이 관찰만으로 어떤 요소가 어떻게 이동했는지에 관한 분석까지 확정하지 않는다. 기본 대명사형 put it off와 *put off it도 함께 비교한다.

11 2011 X34의 look into(조사하다)는 위의 separable put off와 다르다. 문항의 idiomatic reading에서는 into를 의문사와 함께 앞으로 옮길 수 없고, *look it into처럼 V와 into 사이에 목적어를 둘 수도 없다. fronting과 분리 가능성을 별도로 확인해야 하며, 비분리성 하나만으로 look at과 같은 유형이라고 결론 내리지 않는다. 문항의 come across(우연히 발견하다)와 go over(검토하다)도 이 두 조건으로 비교한다.

[NP the student of physics with long hair] → of physics = complement (student가 의미상 요구) → with long hair = adjunct (선택적, 외곽) [NP the student with long hair of physics] — adjunct·complement 순서 위반 → Complement는 head 직속, adjunct는 그 바깥. of physics가 더 안쪽이어야 자연.

Asymmetric vs Symmetric C-command
Asymmetric c-command
A c-commands B, but B does not c-command A (예: subject NP가 object NP를 c-command, but not vice versa)
Symmetric c-command (Mutual)
A c-commands B and B c-commands A (예: 두 sister node)
Subject c-commands Object
[S [NP The teacheri] [VP praised [NP himselfi]]] → NP "the teacher" c-commands NP "himself" (subject NP의 sister인 VP가 object NP를 포함하고, 첫 분기 노드 S가 둘 다 dominate) *[Himselfi] praised [the teacheri].

[S [NP₁ The teacher] [VP praised [NP₂ himself]]] S NP₁ the teacher VP V praised NP₂ himself → NP₁의 첫 분기 노드 S가 NP₂를 dominate → NP₁ c-commands NP₂ (Binding A 충족)
NPI Licensing
[Nobody] has read [any of the reports]. — Nobody c-commands any *[The friend of nobody] has read [any of the reports]. — nobody는 NP 안에 갇혀 any를 c-command 못함 → 이 대조는 부정 평서문의 polarity-sensitive any를 기준으로 한다.
🌀 ⑨ Structural Ambiguity PP attachment etc. ▼
Structural Ambiguity
A sentence has structural ambiguity when the same string of words can be associated with two distinct constituent structures.
PP attachment
The captain saw the pirate with the telescope. → Reading 1 (VP-attachment): [VP saw [NP the pirate] [PP with the telescope]] = 망원경으로 봄 → Reading 2 (NP-attachment): [VP saw [NP the pirate [PP with the telescope]]] = 망원경 든 해적을 봄 → 같은 단어 sequence, 두 개의 tree. constituent 묶음이 다름.

Reading 1 (VP-attachment) — 망원경으로 봤다 (instrument) VP V saw NP the pirate PP with the telescope → PP가 VP에 붙어 보는 행위의 도구를 나타냄

VP V saw NP NP the pirate PP with the telescope → PP가 NP "the pirate" 안에 부가 → 망원경 든 해적을 본 것
Coordination scope
old men and women → Reading 1: [old [men and women]] = 늙은 남녀 → Reading 2: [[old men] and [women]] = 늙은 남자들과 여자들 (나이 미지정)

Reading 1 — [NP old [N′ men and women]] (늙은 남녀) NP A old N′ men and women → "old"가 "men and women" 전체를 수식 → 남녀 모두 늙음

Reading 2 — [NP [NP old men] and [NP women]] (늙은 남자 + 여자 (나이 미지정)) NP NP A old N men Conj and NP women → "old"가 "men"만 수식 → 늙은 남자 + 여자 (women의 나이는 이 구조만으로 정해지지 않음)

NP에 붙는 해석에서는 [the pirate with the telescope] 전체를 him으로 대용할 수 있다. 도구를 나타내는 해석에서는 saw [him] [with the telescope]처럼 PP를 남길 수 있다.

The PP modifies the noun in the NP-attached structure, but modifies the seeing event in the VP-attached structure. The two attachment sites yield different interpretations.
