🏗️ ① D-structure & S-structure two levels ▼
Core Distinction · TG/GB

이를 설명하려면 D-structure(이동 전)가 필요하다.

In this chapter, however, we are going to argue that our existing model of Syntax is not adequate to handle certain characteristic constructions in natural languages, and that in order to provide a principled account of the syntax of these constructions, we need to posit an additional level of structure known as D-structure (corresponding to the level of Deep Structure in earlier models).

The technician repaired the scanner. / The scanner was repaired by the technician.

  1. 먼저 repair의 Theme인 the scanner를 찾는다.
  2. verbal passive에서는 [VP repaired [NP the scanner]]의 NP가 [Spec,IP]로 이동한다고 분석한다.

비교: active의 technician = subject/Agent, passive의 scanner = subject/Theme.

⬆️ ② V-movement (V-to-I) head movement ▼
Core Definition
Under the V-to-I analysis introduced in Radford’s TG §8.2, when finite I has no lexical occupant, the head V of VP raises to the empty I position and acquires the Tense/Agreement features of I. This movement is called V-to-I Movement (or V MOVEMENT).

(e.g., She will leave.)

위 V-to-I 분석에서 Modal이 없는 문장: finite I가 lexically empty이므로 V가 I로 올라가 Tense/Agreement를 얻는다. (e.g., She leaves.)

Affix Movement vs V-movement

Affix movement: I의 Tense/Agreement affix가 V로 내려간다 → inflected V가 VP head에 남는다.

V-movement: V가 I로 올라간다 → inflected V가 I 위치에 있다.

TG §8.2 V-to-I 가정: leaves_i → I (S-structure) IP NP The professor I′ I leaves i VP V′ t i the notes
Affix movement vs V-movement
She reads the letter. D-str: [I [e]] [VP [V read] the letter] Affix movement 분석: reads가 VP head에 있음.

The curator checks the inventory. I→V의 Affix movement 분석은 checks를 VP 안에 둔다. V→I 가정은 checks를 I에 두고 V 자리에 trace를 둔다.

The curator has not checked the inventory. / The curator will not have checked the inventory.

  1. 첫 문장에서는 finite have가 not 앞에 나타난다.
  2. 둘째 문장에서는 modal will이 I에 있고 have는 not 뒤에 남는다.
  3. 이 대조는 have/be raising의 근거다.

함정: *The curator will checks the inventory. modal 뒤의 lexical verb는 base form check여야 한다.

2022 B02는 Head Movement를 lexical V로의 T lowering과 be/have의 T raising으로 나누어 제시한다.

… but Mary did ⟨finish the cake⟩.lexical V: VP-ellipsis → T lowering 대상이 사라짐 → do-support… but Sue was ⟨listening to him⟩.auxiliary be: be가 T로 raising → 남은 VP ellipsis⟨ ⟩는 문항의 삭제 범위다.

lexical V에서는 VP-ellipsis가 먼저이므로 affix를 붙일 V가 남지 않아 did가 필요하다. be에서는 Head Movement가 먼저여서 was가 삭제되는 VP 밖에 남는다.

❓ ③ I-to-C (Subject-Auxiliary Inversion) yes/no question · head movement ▼
Core Definition
In direct yes/no questions, the Modal (or Auxiliary) in I moves to the empty C position. This head movement is called I-to-C Movement (or I MOVEMENT).

D-structure: [CP [C′ [C e] [IP she [I′ [I will] [VP leave]]]]]

S-structure: [CP [C′ [C Will_i] [IP she [I′ [I t_i] [VP leave]]]]]?

(S-structure) CP C′ C Will i IP she I′ t i VP
Gap Argument (4
① Gap argument
I 이동 후 I 위치가 비며, 다른 요소로 채울 수 없다.*Will she can leave?
② Subcategorization
③ HAVE contraction
I-movement 후 남겨진 gap이 HAVE 축약을 차단한다.*Will she've left?
④ Direct vs Indirect Q
Can he solve the problem? C = can_i, I = t_i I wonder if he can solve the problem. C = if (already filled) *I wonder can he solve the problem.

Under this analysis, the universal aspect of WH MOVEMENT is not (as was originally thought) that it positions wh-phrases to the immediate left of C, but rather that it moves wh-phrases to the immediate left of C-bar, into an empty C-specifier position (in languages which are specifier-initial). For obvious reasons, therefore, we might refer to this as the C-specifier analysis.

Radford, A. (1988). Transformational Grammar: A First Course, p. 504.

Which parcel will the courier collect? / I asked which parcel the courier would collect.

  2. 직접의문문의 will은 I에서 C로 이동한다. which parcel과 will은 서로 다른 위치를 차지한다.

I asked if the courier would arrive. I asked which parcel the courier would collect.

🔄 ④ NP-movement: Passive object → subject · Case Filter ▼
Why NP Moves
In passive sentences, the passive verb cannot assign accusative Case to its object NP. The object NP therefore moves to the empty subject position (Spec,IP) to receive nominative Case from I.

subject 위치는 D-structure에서 비어 있다 (no external argument). NP-movement의 landing site는 Spec,IP.

NP-movement (Passive): the letter_i 가 Spec,IP로 이동 IP Spec the letter i I′ I was VP V′ written t i
(Radford)
① Subcategorization
② Gap argument
이동 후 object 위치를 다른 NP로 채울 수 없다.*The letter was written the report.
③ Idiom chunk
Verbal passive vs Adjectival passive
The plan was expected to succeed. verbal passive: NP-movement 적용. idiom chunk·there 허용. The result was unexpected. adjectival passive: NP-movement 미적용. un- prefix는 adjectival. *There was unexpected to be a problem. adjectival passive는 long NP-movement 불허 → verbal passive와 구별 기준
Complement 선택과 passive movement의 조건

The archivist placed the folder on the trolley. → The folder was placed on the trolley.

  1. place는 이 용법에서 NP와 location PP를 요구한다. passive가 되어도 on the trolley는 필요하다.
  2. the folder는 V의 internal argument 위치에서 Theme를 받고, verbal passive의 Case 조건 아래 subject 자리로 이동한다.
  3. *The folder was placed the envelope on the trolley.

The intern was given a badge.

The audience remained very impressed.

🔼 ⑤ NP-movement: Raising raising verb · theta preservation ▼
Core Definition
Raising constructions involve NP-movement of the embedded clause subject to the matrix subject position, because the matrix verb (e.g., seem, appear) does not assign a theta-role to its surface subject.

Raising vs Control
Raising verb
seem, appear, happen, tend, be likely matrix subject = embedded subject (이동) idiom chunk 허용: The cat seems to be out of the bag. expletive there 허용: There seem to be problems.
Control verb
want, try, decide, persuade, force matrix subject ≠ embedded PRO idiom 해석 대조: The cat wants to be out of the bag.는 실제 고양이의 소망이라는 literal reading과 구별 expletive there 불허: *There wants to be problems.
The student seems to understand the rule. D-str: [IP [NP e] [I′ I [VP seems [IP the student to understand the rule]]]] S-str: [IP [The student]_i [I′ I [VP seems [IP t_i to understand the rule]]]] It seems that the student understands the rule. finite that-clause는 expletive it과 함께 grammatical이다.
Idiom chunk / Expletive there 검증
Tabs seem to be kept on all opponents. idiom chunk tabs가 raising subject로 등장 → raising 증거 There appeared to be a problem. expletive there가 raising subject로 등장 → raising 증거 *Tabs want to be kept on all opponents.

The nurse seems to have comforted the child. / The nurse tried to comfort the child.

  3. There seems to be a spare seat. / *There tried to be a spare seat. expletive there는 try의 subject에 부여되는 theta-role을 받을 수 없다.
Voice transparency ·
RaisingThe nurse seems to have comforted the child. The child seems to have been comforted by the nurse.
ControlThe nurse tried to comfort the child. The child tried to be comforted by the nurse.

(4a) The fire fighter attempted to save the man.
(4b) The fire fighter happened to save the man.

구조와 무관하게 구조된 사람은 the man이고, 구조하는 사람은 the fire fighter다.
[The fire fighter]i attempted [PROi to save the man]에서 PRO는 발음되지 않는 하위절 주어다. [The fire fighter]i happened [ti to save the man]처럼 하위절 주어와 이동 관계를 이룬다.
답안용 진단 문장 It happened to rain.
  5. (4a)의 voice 진단 문장은 The man attempted to be saved by the fire fighter.

🔍 ⑥ Wh-movement Spec,CP · operator movement ▼
Core Definition
In wh-questions, the wh-phrase moves from its original position (an argument or adjunct position) to Spec,CP (the specifier of CP). This movement is WH MOVEMENT, an instance of A-bar movement (operator movement).

① Subcategorization
② Gap argument

③ Island constraint

원문과 해설 · 원문: (a) *Susan put the book. / (b) *The ball John hit it broke the window.

  3. (b): 먼저 주절 The ball … broke the window와 그 안의 관계절 John hit … 정상 구조는 the ball [Øwh,i John hit ti]이며, hit은 John에 Agent, 관계사와 연결된 object 자리에 Theme를 준다.
  4. 원문의 it은 그 object 자리를 다시 채운 추가 argument다. hit이 줄 역할은 이미 배정되어 it이 받을 theta-role이 없으므로 조건 (i)를 위반한다.

답안 핵심: (a)는 배정되지 못한 theta-role, (b)는 theta-role을 받지 못한 it을 각각 명시한다.

조건 변경 연습(새 예문): The porter put the suitcase beside the desk. The suitcase which the porter moved was heavy.

[VP [VP turn a friend away] [CP who needs help]]subject NP에서 출발: [TP [TP Few people would [VP work with John]] [CP who knew him]]

둘째는 CP가 TP에 붙으므로 work with John과 who knew him을 합친 문자열이 하나의 VP가 아니다.

👣 ⑦ Trace & Empty Category t_i · NP-trace · wh-trace ▼
Core Definition
When a constituent moves, it leaves behind an empty category called a trace (t) in its original position. The moved element and its trace are coindexed (share the same subscript index).

NP-trace vs Wh-trace
NP-trace
NP-movement(passive, raising)에서 생성 A-position (argument position)에서 A-position으로 이동 antecedent에 의해 locally A-bound Binding Principle A 및 ECP 적용 대상 (이 GB 분석)
Wh-trace
That-trace Effect 26
If overt that immediately precedes the embedded subject trace left by wh-movement, the standard that-trace contrast is ungrammatical. In this GB account, the subject trace fails the proper-government requirement of the ECP.
Who do you think Mary saw t_i? object position trace → properly governed by V saw. *Who do you think that t_i saw Mary? that이 subject trace 앞에 남음 → trace가 제대로 govern되지 않음. That-trace effect 위반. Who do you think t_i saw Mary? that 없이 subject trace → 정문 (that 생략으로 해소).

Object / that 선택 가능Which actor does Lina think (that) the director praised ti?
Subject / overt that 없음Which actor does Lina think ti praised the director?
Subject / overt that 있음*Which actor does Lina think that ti praised the director?

Relative 확장: the actor Lina thinks will win / *the actor Lina thinks that will win.

  1. (a) Who do you think that they told me that [___ would come]?
  2. (b) a program [I feel [___ will help improve your English]] → help의 주어는 program과 연결되지만, 그 절을 도입하는 overt that이 없다. subject gap이 있다는 것만으로 비문은 아니다.
  3. (c) What assurance do I have ___ [that this food is actually good for my body]? → what assurance는 have의 object와 연결된다. that절은 this food라는 주어가 이미 있으며, 그 안에서 주어를 추출한 구조가 아니다.
  4. (d) … to get me to hire ___ → 문두 who는 hire의 목적어와 연결된다.
  5. (e) a legal system [critics said that [___ appeared troubled by arrogance]] → appeared의 주어가 legal system과 연결되는 관계절 구조다. overt that 뒤에 subject gap이 있으므로 (a)와 같은 제약을 위반한다.

정답은 (a), (e).

한 조건만 바꾸기: (a)에서 첫 번째 that만 지우면 두 번째 that + subject gap은 남으므로 문제가 해결되지 않는다.

🏝️ ⑧ Subjacency & Island Constraints bounding node · movement limit ▼
Subjacency Principle
A moved element cannot cross more than one bounding node in a single movement step. In the IP/NP bounding-node analysis used here, the English bounding nodes are IP (= TP, S) and NP.

long movement는 중간 Spec,CP를 거치는 successive cyclic movement로 처리한다.

Island 유형
Subject Island (Subject Condition)
NP subject 내부에서 wh-phrase 추출 불가 *What did [pictures of t] bother him?
Complex NP Island
relative clause 또는 complex NP 내부에서 추출 불가 *Who did she meet [a man [who knew t]]?
Wh-island
embedded wh-clause 내부에서 추출 불가 *How does she wonder [which lock he opened t]?
Coordinate Structure Island
coordination 내 한 쪽 conjunct에서만 추출 불가 *What did she buy t and a book?
Bounding Nodes와 Subjacency 적용
Which book did she say she read t_i? successive cyclic: Spec,CP(embedded) → Spec,CP(matrix). *Which book did she meet a man who had read t_i? Complex NP island: NP와 IP 두 개 넘음 → Subjacency 위반.

So far, we have suggested that all movement rules are inherently bounded, in the sense that no constituent can be moved out of more than one containing bounding category in any single movement.

Which blueprint did Mira say that the engineer revised?

Spec,CP: *How did Mira wonder which blueprint the engineer revised?

Subject 내부와 subject 자체: Who repaired the machine? *What did [pictures of t] surprise the curator?

hear [NP the rumor [CP t′ that [TP Bill broke t]]]두 번째 cycle: embedded Spec CP → matrix Spec CPCP + NP + matrix TP → hear의 complement NP 제외 → CP + TP

*Which actress did [NP a picture of t] scare the entire population?

이 subject-island 예에서는 which actress가 subject NP 내부에서 matrix Spec CP로 한 cycle에 이동하며 NP와 matrix TP를 모두 벗어난다.
