🗣️ ① Speech Act Theory (locutionary · illocutionary · perlocutionary) 3-layer act ▼
Core Definition
A speech act is the action a speaker performs by producing an utterance. Austin distinguishes three aspects of speech acts: the locutionary act, the illocutionary act, and the perlocutionary act.

speech act는 발화로 수행하는 행위다. Austin의 구분은 발화·force·effect를 분석하는 세 층위다. 의도한 effect가 반드시 실현되는 것은 아니다.

3 components 09
Locutionary act
의미 있는 언어 표현을 산출하는 기본 발화 자체소리·단어·구조 + sense/reference
Illocutionary act
발화의 communicative force로 수행되는 행위= illocutionary force (진술·요청·약속·경고)
Perlocutionary act
발화가 청자에게 일으키는 실제 효과= perlocutionary effect (설득·놀람·행동)

변별 핵심: illocutionary = 화자의 force/의도, perlocutionary = 청자에게 미친 결과/effect. 둘을 바꿔 진술하면 X.

작은 화면에서는 그림을 좌우로 밀어 볼 수 있어요.

Speech act 분석 = 발화 · force · 실제 effect 구분 예: "It's freezing in this room." ① LOCUTIONARY 이 문장을 발화함 (소리·단어·구조) ② ILLOCUTIONARY (force = 화자 의도) 요청 맥락: 추위를 해결해 달라 ③ PERLOCUTIONARY (effect = 청자 결과) 청자가 창문을 닫음
예문 — 세 층위 배정 (아래 effect가 실제 발생한 상황)
I'll have the coffee ready by seven. — locutionary: 이 문장을 발화함 / illocutionary: 약속(promise) / perlocutionary: 청자가 안심함. Watch out for the ice! — illocutionary: 경고(warning) / perlocutionary: 청자가 걸음을 멈춤. You're fired. (상사가 적법하게 발화) — illocutionary: 해고 선언 / perlocutionary: 직원이 충격을 받음. 같은 locutionary act라도 맥락에 따라 다른 illocutionary force를 가질 수 있다(It's cold in here = statement 또는 request).
📝 출제 각도 (Pragmatics – Speech Acts – Loc/Illoc/Perloc)

세 종류 구분 + 빈칸에 illocutionary 채우기, "speaker's intent(praise/criticize/warn/threaten)" = illocutionary로 식별. 청자에게 미친 효과는 perlocutionary로 분리하는 것이 핵심 함정.

원서 읽기

Illocutionary force may accompany utterances without overt performative verbs, for example I’ve got five bucks that says you’re wrong has the illocutionary force of a bet under appropriate circumstances. Because the illocutionary force of a speech act depends on the context of the utterance, speech act theory is a part of pragmatics.

해설 · 발화수반력은 발화가 문맥에서 하는 행위다. 그 결과 청자가 실제로 한 행동과 구별한다.

창가의 동료에게 The rain is coming in.

Performative vs Constative
A performative utterance performs an action rather than describing a state of affairs (I promise to repay you, I name this ship Aurora); a constative states something true or false (The ship is in the harbor).

performative는 발화가 곧 행위를 수행하는 문장이고, constative는 참·거짓을 진술하는 문장이다.

Performative verb — 전형적인 explicit 형식
A performative verb names the illocutionary force it performs (confess, warn, promise, apologize, declare). A typical explicit performative uses (i) positive · (ii) present tense · (iii) first-person agent · (iv) refer to a specific event; the adverb hereby can be inserted.

performative verb는 자기가 수행하는 illocutionary force를 직접 명명한다. positive·present·first-person·specific은 전형적인 explicit performative를 점검하는 특징이다. 모든 speech act의 필요충분조건은 아니며, 실제 행위 성립은 맥락과 권한도 확인한다.

I hereby resign from the committee. — 사임 행위 수행(hereby 삽입 가능). I resigned from the committee last year. — 과거시제 → performative sense 없음, 단지 상태 기술(constative). 과거 약속을 보고하는 것과 지금 약속하는 것을 구별한다. explicit performative 형식이 없어도 request나 warning을 수행할 수 있다.
Felicity conditions — 5종

Felicity conditions는 어떤 speech act가 성공적(felicitous)으로 성립하기 위한 조건들이다.

General
청자가 그 locution을 이해할 수 있어야 함
Propositional content
내용이 행위에 맞음(threat은 미래 행위 관련)
Preparatory
현실 전제 충족(청자가 요청을 수행 가능)
Sincerity
화자가 그 행위를 실제로 의도함
Essential
발화가 양측에게 그 행위의 실현으로 간주됨
I promise to email you the draft tonight. — 성공하려면 화자가 실제로 보낼 의도(sincerity) + 보낼 능력(preparatory) 필요. 청자가 그 언어를 전혀 모르면 위협은 general condition 위반으로 실패. 친구가 장난으로 You're under arrest! — 관련 제도적 권한·절차 없음 → 실제 체포 선언으로는 성립하지 않음.

원서 읽기

An informal test to see whether a sentence contains a performative verb is to begin it with the words I hereby. . . . Only performative sentences sound right when begun this way. Compare I hereby apologize to you with the somewhat strange I hereby know you. The first is generally taken as an act of apologizing.

해설 · hereby는 명시적 수행문 진단이다. 수행동사가 드러나지 않아도 문맥에 따른 발화수반력은 있을 수 있다.

문장 형태와 지금 수행하는 행위
예문기능
I promise to return the tablet tomorrow.지금 약속하는 explicit performative
I promised to return it yesterday.과거 약속을 보고하는 statement

Report 역시 statement라는 speech act이므로 “performative sense가 없다 = 아무 행위도 하지 않는다”는 결론은 틀리다.

The door is open.

Core Definition
A direct speech act uses a sentence type with its canonical function; an indirect speech act uses a sentence type to perform a different function. The literal force is secondary; the intended force is primary.

문장 유형은 각각 기본 기능과 짝지어진다 — declarative–statement, interrogative–question, imperative–command/request. 기본 기능대로 쓰면 direct, 다른 기능으로 쓰면 indirect speech act다.

indirect가 일반적으로 더 공손하게 느껴진다. 다만 청자가 문자 그대로(direct) 반응하면 의도된 force를 놓칠 수 있다.

Sentence type ↔ function 12
Sentence typeCanonical function (direct)Indirect 사용 예
DeclarativestatementI can't hear the lecture over here. → 요청
InterrogativequestionWould you mind shutting the gate? → 요청
Imperativecommand/requestHand me the wrench. → 그대로 명령(direct)
예문
Would you mind shutting the gate? — 의문형식이지만 primary force = 요청(indirect). I can't hear the lecture over here. — 주변 소음을 줄여 달라는 상황이라면 간접 요청(indirect); 문장만으로 요청 내용을 고정하지 않는다. Hand me the wrench. — 명령형식이 명령 기능(direct request). Do you happen to know the way to the station? — 청자가 Yes. 로만 답하면 indirect request를 놓친 것. It's getting awfully late. — 손님에게 귀가를 암시할 수 있지만, 함께 급히 출발하자는 뜻일 수도 있으므로 상황 확인.
📝 출제 각도 (Pragmatics – Primary / Indirect Illocutionary Force)

2012학년도 1차 34번 — 회의 시작 전 잡담하는 사람들에게 하는 “I’ll declare the meeting open soon”은 간접적으로 조용히 하도록 요청하는 기능을 한다. 실제 개회를 선언하는 “I declare the meeting open”과 시제 및 발화 상황을 구별한다.

The briefing will begin in a moment.

Cooperative Principle (Grice)
Grice's Cooperative Principle: make your conversational contribution such as is required, at the stage at which it occurs, by the accepted purpose of the talk exchange — i.e. participants are assumed to cooperate.

Cooperative Principle는 대화 참여자가 대화 목적에 맞게 협력한다는 가정이다. 화자가 maxim을 글자 그대로 지키는 게 아니라, 청자가 마치 지켜진 것처럼 해석한다 — maxim이 깨진 듯 보이면 청자는 협력을 복원하는 추론(implicature)을 끌어낸다.

Four Maxims 09
Quantity
필요한 만큼만 정보 — 과다·과소 금지
Quality
참이라 믿고 근거 있는 것만 말함
Relation (Relevance)
관련된 것을 말함
Manner
명확히 — 모호·중의·장황 회피, 순서 있게
A: How many siblings do you have? B: Two: one sister and one brother. — 요구된 수를 충분히 제공. Quality flouting: 발표가 엉망인데 That was a flawless presentation. (반어 → 실제로는 형편없다는 함축). Relation: A: Has the last bus left? B: The driver has locked the depot. — 그 행동이 운행 종료를 뜻한다는 공유 지식이 있을 때 간접 답으로 추론. Quantity 위반(과소): A: What did you cook? B: Food. — 음식 종류를 묻고 있음을 알면서 회피한다면 Quantity flouting으로 해석 가능.
📝 출제 각도 (Pragmatics – Conversational Maxim – Maxim of Relation)

직접 요청 없이 관련 발화로 의도가 전달되는 대화에서 어떤 maxim이 작동하는지 식별: W: Isn't it too cold? M: I'll turn on the stove. → 청자가 Maxim of Relation으로 request로 해석.

The maxim of relevance explains how saying “It’s cold in here” to a person standing by an open window might be interpreted as a request to close it: or else why make the remark to that particular person in the first place?

해설 · 열린 창가의 상대에게 하는 말이라는 맥락이 요청 해석을 만든다. 간접 표현이라는 이유만으로 특정 격률을 기계적으로 고르지 않는다.

Where is Mina?에 Her bicycle is outside the studio.

A: “Shall we bring out the P-U-P-P-E-T now?”
B: “Not yet.”

Core Definition
A conversational implicature is an unstated proposition the hearer infers from the CP and maxims plus context, over and above the literal meaning. It is calculable (CP+maxim으로 추론 가능) and cancellable / defeasible (명시적으로 취소 가능).

conversational implicature는 글자 그대로의 의미를 넘어 CP·maxim·맥락으로 청자가 추론하는 함축이다.

Flouting vs Violation
Flouting
청자가 알아채도록 의도적으로 maxim 위반함축 전달 (irony · hyperbole · sarcasm)
(quietly) Violate
청자 모르게 위반(예: 거짓말)함축을 의도하지 않음
Generalized vs Particularized
Particularized
특정 맥락에 의존하는 함축그 맥락에서만 함축 발생
Generalized
발화의 일반적 특징에서 발생특수한 배경 없이도 통상 추론되지만 맥락에 의해 취소 가능
Particularized — A: Are you joining us for dinner? B: I have a deadline at midnight. → (이 맥락에서) 안 간다. 같은 문장 I have a deadline at midnight. 은 다른 맥락에선 그 함축이 없음 → particularized임을 보여줌. Generalized — She walked into a house. → (특별 배경 없이) 그 집은 그녀의 집이 아니다. Flouting(과장): 가벼운 부탁에 I've asked you a thousand times! → 자주 부탁했다는 함축. Cancellability: Some of the guests left — in fact, all of them did. → some의 함축(not all)이 취소됨.
📝 출제 각도 (Pragmatics – Conversational Implicature / CP)

implicature가 Cooperative Principle·maxim으로 설명된다는 지문 출제. flouting(의도적·함축 전달)과 quiet violation(거짓말)의 구분이 핵심 변별.

자세히 보기: flouting · violation · 취소

해설 · 적용과 판별

With flouting, the hearer recognizes a conspicuous departure and uses it to infer an additional message. This differs from covertly misleading the hearer. A conversational implicature can be weakened or cancelled by further information while the literal statement remains intact. Separate the asserted content from the inferred message before deciding what has been cancelled.

개념 근거: Fromkin, V., Rodman, R., & Hyams, N. (2014). An Introduction to Language, 10th ed., Ch.4, pp.171–175. 학습용 재서술.

자료를 보지 않은 발표자가 수치를 사실인 양 꾸며 말하고 청자가 믿게 하려 한다면 Quality violation이다. 모두가 형편없는 결과를 본 뒤 What a triumph!이라고 비꼬면 청자가 표면적 어긋남을 알아채도록 하는 flouting이다. 의도적이라는 특징만으로 두 유형을 구별할 수 없다.

Can you stay for rehearsal?에 I have an early train.이라는 답은 참석하기 어렵다는 particularized implicature를 낳을 수 있다. But I can stay for another hour.

A: What happened at the interview?B: To make a long story short, they offered me the job.

hedge인 to make a long story short는 세부 과정을 생략하고 요약한다는 신호다. 정보량에 관한 Quantity와 연결된다. 2025 A02는 이 표현이 없는 상황에서 생길 conversational implicature를 묻는다. 요약을 예고하는 표현과 ‘채용 제안을 받았다’는 문자적 내용을 분리한다. 이 표현이 있다고 모든 함축이 없어지거나 채용 사실을 덜 확실하게 주장하는 것은 아니다.

📊 ⑥ Scalar & Conventional Implicature · Entailment vs Implicature 취소 가능 여부 ▼
Scalar implicature
Scalar implicature (a generalized conversational implicature): using a weaker alternative can implicate the negation of a relevant stronger alternative, when the speaker is assumed to know whether it holds. On ⟨all, most, many, some⟩, using some implicates not all. It is cancellable.

관련 scale와 화자의 지식이 주어지면 약한 항 사용에서 강한 항의 부정을 추론할 수 있다(⟨all…some⟩에서 some → not all). generalized conversational implicature의 하위이고 cancellable하다.

Conventional implicature
Conventional implicature: a non-truth-conditional meaning conventionally attached to particular lexical items, not derived solely by conversational calculation and NOT cancellable. The standard introductory example is but (contrast); analyses of other expressions depend on the theoretical framework.

Conventional implicature취소 불가아님어휘적 의미 + 맥락에 따른 대조 해석

핵심: entailment는 진리조건의 일부라 취소 불가, conversational implicature는 취소 가능, conventional implicature는 취소 불가지만 진리조건과 무관하다.

예문
Scalar: Some of the reviewers liked the draft. → 보통 전부는 아니라고 추론(cancellable: …actually, all of them did). Scalar: The water is warm. → 관련 척도와 맥락에서 뜨겁지는 않다고 추론할 수 있다(⟨hot, warm⟩). Conventional(but): She is thrifty but generous. → 검소함과 관대함이 대조된다는 함축(취소 불가). 관련 비교(even): Even the interns finished early. → 관련 대안 중 인턴이 일찍 끝내는 것이 상대적으로 예상 밖이라는 의미(분석 틀에 따라 presupposition으로 분류). Entailment: The gardener pruned every rose. ⊨ The gardener pruned a rose. (해당 domain에 장미가 하나 이상 존재할 때; 취소 시 모순).
자세히 보기: some · but · entailment의 세 가지 검사

Some of the applications were accepted.의 some을 “적어도 일부”로 읽으면 all이 참인 상황도 문자적 내용과 양립한다. 화자가 전체 결과를 알고, 전체 여부가 대화에서 중요하다면 all 대신 some을 택한 데서 not all을 추론하기 쉽다.

I have only checked the first batch; perhaps all were accepted.라는 배경에서는 화자가 all인지 모를 수 있다. 이때 not all을 필연적 사실로 채점하지 않는다. In fact, all were accepted.로 앞의 not all 추론을 취소해도 적어도 일부가 합격했다는 내용은 유지된다.

The room is small but comfortable.에서 두 성질을 함께 주장하는 내용과 대조를 표시하는 but의 기여를 구별한다. 입문적 conventional implicature 분석에서는 같은 but 용법을 유지하면서 그 대조를 단순 취소하기 어렵다고 설명한다. small과 comfortable이 왜 대조되는지는 맥락에 달려 있다.

Entailment는 reference·sense·domain을 고정한 뒤 p가 참이고 q가 거짓인 경우가 가능한지 본다. Every cup is cracked에서 A cup is cracked로 가려면 cup이 하나 이상 있다는 domain에 관한 조건이 필요하다. 존재 조건을 숨긴 채 every가 언제나 some을 entail한다고 일반화하지 않는다.

기출 판별 · Some이 있으면 모든 추론이 scalar일까? 13

scalar implicature를 판정할 때는 발화에 척도 표현이 있는지와 제시된 추론이 더 강한 대안의 부정인지를 함께 확인한다. 2013 X33의 fairly warm → not hot은 정도 척도를, two or three → not more는 수량 척도를 이용한다.

반면 Some listeners left early → The talk was bad에서 ‘강연이 나빴다’는 some보다 강한 수량 대안의 부정이 아니다.

A presupposition is background information the speaker takes for granted as already true. It is identified by the constancy under negation test: under ordinary negation (and often questions), the background assumption typically persists.

Constancy under negation — S와 ¬S가 같은 presupposition P를 공유 S: Owen has quit smoking. (긍정문) ¬S: Owen hasn't quit smoking. (부정문) P: Owen used to smoke. 긍정·부정 모두 P를 presuppose → 유지
Presupposition triggers
Definite expression
the dean of the college → 그 인물이 존재
Factive verb
regret · realize · be aware · be odd → 보문 참
Implicative / complement 주의
manage to p의 성공은 entailment; forget that p와 forget to p를 구별
Change-of-state verb
stop · begin · continue
Iterative
again · return
Cleft / Wh-question
It was X that… → someone did it

함정 — non-factive: think, believe, claim, maintain, be likely는 보문의 참을 전제하지 않는다(presupposition trigger 아님).

예문
Definite: The dean of the college didn't resign. → 그 college에 dean이 존재한다(부정해도 유지). Factive: Noah regrets / doesn't regret selling the car. → Noah가 차를 팔았다(유지). Iterative: The comet appeared / didn't appear again. → 그 혜성이 전에 나타났다. Non-factive 함정: The witness claimed / didn't claim that the safe was empty. → 금고가 비었는지 전제 안 됨.
📝 출제 각도 (Pragmatics – Truth Condition – Entailment & Presupposition)

두 문장쌍의 의미 관계를 entailment/presupposition으로 분류하고 truth 조건으로 설명: John doesn't eat vegetables ⊨ doesn't eat broccoli(entailment); John regretted telling a lie ≫ John told a lie(presupposition). 같은 q를 고정하고 p와 not-p에서 각각 보장되는지 검사한다. 모든 부정문에 entailment가 없다는 뜻은 아니다.

원서 읽기

Presuppositions also differ from entailments in that they are taken for granted by speakers adhering to the cooperative principle. Unlike entailments, they remain when the sentence is negated. On the other hand, while Jon killed Jim entails Jim died, no such entailment follows from Jon did not kill Jim.

해설 · 같은 proposition을 놓고 부정 후에도 남는 배경인지, 긍정문에서만 보장되는 entailment인지 비교한다.

Lena regrets sending the message.와 Lena does not regret sending the message.를 비교하자. 감정에 대한 assertion은 달라지지만, 보통 Lena가 메시지를 보냈다는 배경은 유지된다. Lena believes that the message arrived.의 believe 자체는 도착 사실을 보장하지 않는다.

Lena managed to unlock the box.는 성공했다는 해석에서는 상자를 열었다는 결과를 entail한다. Lena did not manage to unlock the box.는 그 성공 결과를 유지하지 않는다. 노력·어려움에 관한 배경 추론과 실제 성공을 혼동하지 않는다. forgot that she had locked it와 forgot to lock it도 보문 형태가 달라 같은 trigger 규칙으로 처리할 수 없다.

Negation test는 특정 q의 유지 여부를 비교하는 진단이다. not-p가 아무 entailment도 갖지 않는다는 뜻이 아니다. 또한 trigger가 조건절 등에 포함되어 있을 때 그 배경 내용이 문장 전체의 전제로 항상 유지되는 것은 아니다. 예를 들어 If Nora owns a bicycle, her bicycle is in the shed.는 Nora의 bicycle 소유를 무조건 주장·전제하는 단순문과 구별한다.

답안에는 관계명만 쓰기보다 trigger, 비교할 q, ordinary negation 아래 q의 유지 여부를 적는다. presupposition의 배경 내용과 assertion의 참·거짓을 분리하고, 지문이 채택한 의미 관계 정의를 우선 확인한다.

🎯 ⑧ Politeness · Face · FTA · Deixis face · 맥락 지시 ▼
Politeness · Face · FTA
Face is a person's public self-image. Positive face = the desire to be approved of and to belong; negative face = the desire to be unimpeded and autonomous. A face-threatening act (FTA) intrinsically threatens face (requests, orders, refusals, criticisms).

face는 공적 자아상으로, positive face(인정·소속 욕구)와 negative face(불간섭·자율 욕구)로 나뉜다. FTA는 상대의 face를 위협하는 행위(요청·명령·거절·비판)다.

전략(strategies): bald on record(완화 없음) · positive politeness(연대감 호소) · negative politeness(deference·hedge·간접성) · off record(간접 암시).

Negative politeness(indirect): I'm so sorry to bother you, but could you possibly move your bag? — negative face 배려. Positive politeness: Hey buddy, give us a hand with this, would you? — 친밀감·소속 강조. Bald on record: Pass the report.

A: “The screen is hard to read with all this sunlight.”
B: “I'll lower the blind.”

Deixis
Deixis = expressions whose reference depends on the utterance context (Greek 'pointing via language'). 핵심 3종 + 확장 2종.
Person deixis
I, you, she
Spatial deixis
here, there, thisproximal ↔ distal
Temporal deixis
now, then, tomorrow

확장: social deixis(사회적 관계·honorific 부호화) · discourse deixis(담화 내 부분 지시: the former, as noted above).

proximal(화자에 가까움): this / here / now  ↔  distal(화자에서 멂): that / there / then.

Deictic shifting 10

Deictic shifting에서는 새 보고 맥락에서도 원래의 사람·시간·장소를 가리키도록 표현을 조정한다. 보고하는 날이나 장소가 같은지에 따라 yesterday, five years ago 등이 그대로 유지될 수 있다. 다른 사람이 간접 보고한다면 I를 원화자를 가리키는 이름이나 대명사로 조정한다. 원화자 자신의 재보고나 직접 인용은 구별한다.

📝 출제 각도 (Pragmatics – Deixis – Deictic Expressions)

2010학년도 1차 34번 — 같은 날 다른 장소에서 재보고하는 조건이다. 사람·장소·시간 표현을 각각 확인하며, yesterday와 five years ago는 이 조건에서 바꾸지 않는다.

기출·변형 비교: face와 deictic center

해설 · 적용과 판별

A deictic expression is interpreted relative to contextual coordinates such as speaker, location and time. In reported speech, preserve the intended referent while adjusting expressions whose reference would change with the new context. Changing the reporting time does not affect all time expressions in the same way; identify the temporal anchor used by each expression.

Brown & Levinson의 positive/negative face는 좋음/나쁨의 평가가 아니다. 부탁은 상대의 행동 자유와, 비판은 상대의 인정 욕구와 충돌할 수 있다. Could you move your chair?는 흔한 완화 방식이지만 어조·관계·부담이 판단에 관여한다. 긴급한 Move back!가 indirect 형식보다 부적절하다고 단정하지 않는다.

2010학년도 1차 34번: 오전에 길 건너에서 들은 말을 같은 날 오후 3시에 다른 사람에게 간접 보고한다. right here와 on the other side of the street는 장소 기준점, in an hour는 시각 기준점, I는 화자 기준점이 달라져 조정이 필요하다. yesterday와 five years ago는 같은 날이라는 조건 때문에 원래 대상을 유지한다.

특히 in an hour는 같은 날이어도 오전 발화 시각과 오후 보고 시각에 서로 다른 시간을 가리킨다. 시간 표현은 전부 그대로/전부 변경이라는 이분법이 아니라 표현이 기준으로 삼는 시간 단위를 확인한다.

변형 연습: 수요일 도서관에서 Mina가 준호에게 I will meet you here tomorrow.라고 말했다. 목요일 집에서 준호가 제삼자에게 간접 보고한다면 I의 대상은 Mina, you의 대상은 준호, here의 대상은 도서관, tomorrow의 대상은 목요일로 유지해야 한다. 원래 청자인 준호가 이제 보고하는 화자이므로 you는 me로 바뀐다. Mina said she would meet me at the library today.처럼 새 보고 맥락에 맞춰 표현할 수 있다. 직접 인용을 보존하는 경우와는 구별한다.

기출 적용 · 뒤의 대상을 가리키는 This와 단정을 줄이는 Sort of 20
I noticed this on the sleeve. There is a silver star on it.The jacket is sort of elegant.

첫 this의 지시 대상이 뒤의 a silver star로 밝혀지므로 cataphoric words의 예다. 대상을 먼저 소개한 뒤 It is silver.

May I offer you some coffee?와 친한 사이의 Coffee?는 상황에 따른 register 차이를 보여 준다. Informal style도 생략·축약·어휘 선택의 규칙을 갖는다. 2007 S16은 with whom·one·converse를 하나씩 치환하는 것만으로 자연스러운 구어가 완성되지 않음을 보여 준다. 2008 N08의 자동적 style shift 설명도 모든 말투 선택이 언제나 무의식적이라는 보편 명제로 확대하지 않는다.

Her grandfather died.와 Her grandfather passed away.는 같은 사망 사건을 가리킬 수 있지만 청자에게 주는 느낌이 다르다. 후자는 직접적 표현을 완화하는 euphemism이다. 격식 정도와 불쾌감·충격을 줄이려는 기능을 따로 판단한다. 모든 formal 표현이 euphemism이거나 모든 맥락에서 두 표현이 자유롭게 교체되는 것은 아니다.
