🎯 ① Theta Theory & Theta Criterion 의미역 · 토대 ▼
Core Definition
Theta Criterion (Chomsky 1981): Each argument bears one and only one theta-role, and each theta-role is assigned to one and only one argument.

argument(논항)는 정확히 하나의 theta-role(의미역: Agent, Theme, Goal, Experiencer 등)을 받고, 각 theta-role도 정확히 하나의 argument에만 할당된다.

A theta-role expresses an argument’s semantic relation to a predicate; Case concerns its syntactic licensing. Do not identify either with the surface labels subject and object. In a control analysis, the overt controller and PRO are separate arguments, even when both refer to the same person; a raising chain instead connects positions of the moved expression.

Radford, A. (1988). Transformational Grammar: A First Course, §7.14, pp.390–391. Radford, A. (1988). Transformational Grammar: A First Course, §6.7, pp.317–324.

The guard opened the gate.

The guard seems [___ to open the gate]. / The guard tries [___ to open the gate].

조건 변경: guard를 dummy it으로 바꾸고 하위절을 to rain으로 바꾸면 It seems to rain.은 가능하지만 시도 의미의 *It tries to rain.

SSR verb(seem, appear …)

Control verb(try, persuade …)

Theta Criterion
필요한 argument가 없어 theta-role이 배정되지 못함 → 비문*The student put the book.(이 put 용법에는 Theme와 Location argument가 필요)
Theta Criterion
추가 NP가 받을 theta-role이 없음 → 비문*The student arrived the parcel the office.(이 구문에서 arrive는 추가 목적어를 허용하지 않음)

🔼 ② Subject-to-Subject Raising (SSR) seem · NP-movement ▼
Core Definition
Raising verbs (seem, appear, be likely, turn out, be unlikely, prove) assign no theta-role to their surface subject. The subject of the embedded infinitival clause undergoes NP-movement to the matrix Spec,IP. This is Subject-to-Subject Raising (SSR).

왜 NP가 이동하나? 하위 infinitival I(to)는 nominative Case를 주지 못한다.

It is believed [that the team will win].It is believed [the team to win].The teamᵢ is believed [tᵢ to win].

finite that절의 the team은 그 절 안에서 nominative Case를 받는다. infinitival to는 같은 Case를 줄 수 없고 passive believed도 목적격을 주지 못한다. 따라서 expletive it을 넣는 대신 the team을 finite matrix subject 자리로 옮긴다.

Tom appears to Mary to be believed by his friends to brag about himself에서 theta-role의 출처는 가장 낮은 brag다. to Mary와 by his friends는 PP 내부 NP이므로 중간 subject로 세지 않는다.

Core Definition

(a) The director motivated the assistant to work more carefully. (b) The director reported the assistant to be unreliable. (c) The director threatened the assistanti to dismiss heri.

(a) object control: 더 신중하게 일하는 사람은 the assistant다. The director motivated the assistanti [PROi to work more carefully]에서 the assistant는 motivate의 목적어이면서 PRO의 controller다.

(b) Raising/ECM: 신뢰할 수 없는 사람이라고 보고되는 대상은 the assistant다. the assistant가 하위절의 overt subject이므로 PRO를 넣지 않는다.

(c) subject control: 해고하겠다고 위협한 사람은 the director이고, 해고의 대상인 her는 the assistant다. The directorj threatened the assistanti [PROj to dismiss heri]로 읽는다.

There threatens to be a shortage of clean water.

Subject control · 여기서는 NP V to-VP에서 matrix subject가 하위절의 PRO를 control하는 용법이다. be anxious도 해당 subject-control infinitive에서 비교한다.

The researchers planned to start their project.

분석용 약식 표기: the researchersᵢ planned [PROᵢ to start their project].

Miraᵢ promised Daniel [PROᵢ to mail the forms]와 Mira persuaded Danielᵢ [PROᵢ to mail the forms]를 구분한다.

Ed believes there to be a problem. expletive: persuade 불허(목적어 theta-position) / believe 허용(하위절 주어) Ed persuaded Brian to interview Melanie. ≠ Ed persuaded Melanie to be interviewed by Brian. voice transparency Lena persuaded Max that he should obey his supervisor. 와 believe that … In short, then, there are numerous syntactic and semantic arguments in support of claiming that Verbs like believe are two-place Predicates which take an infinitival S Complement, whereas Verbs like persuade are three-place Predicates which take a Primary NP Object and a Secondary infinitival S-bar Object: cf. the different structures assigned to the two in (115) above.

(a) Lena persuaded Max to obey his supervisor. (b) Lena believed Max to be obedient to his supervisor.

Lena persuaded Maxi [PROi to obey his supervisor]이다.

(c) Lena persuaded Max that he should obey his supervisor. (d) Lena believed that Max was obedient to his supervisor.

(c)의 Max는 that절 밖의 목적어이고, (d)의 Max는 that절 안의 주어다.

The analyst believes there to be a mismatch in the figures. The analyst persuaded there to be a mismatch in the figures.

Object control · 여기서는 NP V NP to-VP에서 뒤 NP가 설득·지시·조언의 대상이고, 그 matrix object가 하위절 PRO를 control하는 용법이다. tell a story, convince NP that …

John persuaded Sue to obey her parents.

John persuaded Sueᵢ [PROᵢ to obey her parents]처럼 matrix object와 embedded PRO를 따로 표시한다.

위 비교표의 Nari was persuaded는 matrix passive다.

  • The tutor expected there to be a delay.
  • *The tutor persuaded there to be a delay.

expected 뒤 there는 existential clause의 주어다.

Johnᵢ was said [tᵢ to have solved all of the questions].Johnᵢ was told [PROᵢ to solve all of the questions].

The earthquake was said to have hit the city는 가능하지만 *The earthquake was told to hit the city는 해당 지시 의미에서 허용되지 않는다.

👻 ⑥ PRO empty subject · controlled vs arbitrary ▼
Core Definition
PRO is the phonetically null subject of a non-finite (control) clause — an empty category that bears a theta-role from the embedded predicate. PRO is base-generated (not the result of movement).

I will try PRO to solve the problem — PRO는 solve의 Agent argument로 theta-role을 받는다.

(a) Minai believes that it is important [PROi/j to stay calm]. (b) [PRO to prepare himself for the interview], Alex should consider coaching. (c) Mina is difficult [PRO to work with].

(c) arbitrary PRO: Mina는 함께 일하는 상대다. work with 뒤의 목적어 자리와 Mina가 연결되고, PRO는 일반적으로 Mina와 함께 일하는 사람으로 해석된다.

원문이 제시한 arbitrary/non-arbitrary 및 obligatory/optional 구분에 맞춰 답한다.

SSR: "The matrix predicate assigns no theta-role to its subject; the embedded subject NP undergoes NP-movement to matrix Spec,IP and retains its embedded theta-role."

SOR·ECM: "The matrix verb assigns objective Case to the embedded subject across the clause boundary; the NP behaves as the subject of the infinitival clause (expletive/idiom/voice transparency)."
