📝 핵심 비교 포인트 (Ch.7 Semantics)

① Entailment vs Presupposition 10: 두 문장쌍의 의미 관계를 truth-table 기준으로 판별 (entailment 방향 검사 / presupposition constancy under negation)

② Thematic roles: argument들의 role 식별 + role이 grammatical function과 독립적임 (같은 NP가 subject↔object여도 Theme 유지)

③ Lexical relations: hyponymy 방향(hyponym ⊨ superordinate), gradable vs complementary vs converse antonymy

④ Reference & deixis: 같은 reference, 다른 sense / proximal vs distal deictic expressions

⑤ 함정: hyponymy 역방향(superordinate ⊭ hyponym), presupposition은 보통 부정 시 유지(사라진다 X), homonymy(무관) vs polysemy(관련)

⑥ Scope interaction 18 — quantifier와 거부 표현의 적용 범위에 따라 두 해석을 구분

🔭 ① Sense & Reference (denotation · connotation · deixis) 의미 vs 지시 ▼
Core Definition
Sense is the internal, mental meaning content of an expression — the way it presents its referent. Reference is the relation between an expression and the actual entity (the referent) it picks out in the world.

sense는 표현이 가진 내적·개념적 의미이고, reference는 그 표현이 실제 세계에서 가리키는 대상(referent)과의 관계다.

두 표현이 같은 referent를 가리켜도 sense는 다를 수 있다(Frege의 고전적 논점): the morning star와 the evening star는 둘 다 Venus를 reference하지만 sense가 다르다.

Denotation vs Connotation
Denotation
단어의 문자적·중심 의미 / 단어가 적용되는 대상들의 집합
Connotation
denotation과 별도로 연상되는 정서적·문화적 함축(overtone)
home vs house — home은 소속·안정의 connotation을 가질 수 있다. 두 단어의 denotation이 언제나 같다는 뜻은 아니다. thrifty vs stingy — 비슷한 denotation(돈을 아낌)이나 connotation이 정반대(긍정/부정). denotation과 connotation은 별개다 — 동의어가 아니다.
Deixis (reference 맥락) ※ 핵심은 화용 챕터 — 여기선 지시 맥락에서만

Deictic expression은 발화 맥락(화자·시간·장소)에 따라 referent가 정해지는 표현이다(Greek 'pointing').

person deixis
I, you, he, she, they
spatial deixis
here, there, this, that
temporal deixis
now, then, last week

proximal(화자에 가까움): this / here / now  ↔  distal(화자에서 멂): that / there / then.

📝 적용 연습 (Semantics – Reference / Deixis)

같은 referent를 가리키는 두 표현의 sense 차이 식별, person/spatial deixis 식별과 deictic shifting을 함께 연습한다.

On the other hand, not every NP refers to an individual. For instance, the sentence No baby swims contains the NP no baby, but your linguistic knowledge tells you that this NP does not refer to any specific individual. If no baby has no reference, but is not meaningless, then something about meaning beyond reference must be present.

출처: Fromkin, V., Rodman, R., & Hyams, N. (2014). An Introduction to Language, 10th ed., p. 154.

The prize winner arrived early. The final speaker arrived early.이 상황에서 같은 사람의 도착을 말할 수 있지만, 두 표현이 모든 상황에서 synonym이라는 결론은 나오지 않는다. 다른 행사에서는 수상자와 마지막 발표자가 달라도 된다.

비교: I will return here tomorrow.의 I·here·tomorrow는 발화자·장소·날짜를 알아야 reference를 정할 수 있다. 같은 문장을 다른 사람이 다음 날 말하면 referent가 바뀐다. 문맥이 달라지는 reference와 lexical sense가 여러 개인 polysemy를 혼동하지 않는다.

답안 순서: 표현 → 문맥에서 지시하는 대상 → 그 대상을 제시하는 sense 순으로 쓴다. 동일 referent라는 사실만으로 동일 sense를 결론 내리지 않는다.

⚖️ ② Synonymy & Antonymy 동의 · 반의 3유형 ▼
Synonymy
Synonymy is sameness or near-sameness of sense (big/large, buy/purchase). True synonymy is rare; synonyms are usually context-dependent — interchangeable in some contexts but not all.

synonymy는 sense가 같거나 거의 같은 관계인데, 완전 동의어는 드물고 대개 context-dependent다(어떤 문맥에서만 교체 가능).

a small chance / a little chance — 둘 다 자연스러움. a small boy(크기) ≠ a little boy(어림+귀여움) — 문맥 의존. 같은 어휘쌍이라도 context에 따라 교체 가능 여부가 달라진다.
Antonymy — 3 standard sub-types
Complementary (binary)
정해진 domain·literal reading에서 한쪽 부정 = 다른쪽 긍정중간값 없음정도 부사·비교급 부자연awake/asleep, legal/illegal, true/false
Gradable
척도상 대립, 중간값 존재정도 부사·비교급 가능상대적, 한쪽 unmarkedcheap/expensive, warm/cool, bright/dim
Converse (relational)
같은 관계를 반대 관점에서서로 paraphraseteacher/student, lend/borrow, in front of/behind

markedness 07: How long is the train?은 길이를 중립적으로 묻는다. How short is the train?은 기차가 짧다는 전제를 담는다. Unmarked인 long을 사용했다고 기차가 길다고 단정하지 않는다.

함정: hot/cold는 complementary가 아니라 gradable이다 — warm/cool 등 중간값이 존재한다.

📝 적용 연습 (Lexical Relations – Antonymy)

gradable 여부와 complementary/converse 분류를 비교한다. converse(=relational) 쌍의 paraphrase 관계 판별이 주요 연습 내용이다.

자세히 보기 · 세 관계를 같은 질문으로 구별하기

원서 읽기

They are called relational opposites, and they display symmetry in their meanings. If X gives Y to Z, then Z receives Y from X. If X is Y’s teacher, then Y is X’s pupil. Pairs of words ending in -er and -ee are usually relational opposites. If Mary is Bill’s employer, then Bill is Mary’s employee.

출처: Fromkin, V., Rodman, R., & Hyams, N. (2014). An Introduction to Language, 10th ed., p. 157. 발췌; 밑줄 추가.

해설 · give/receive, teacher/pupil은 동일 관계를 다른 참여자 관점에서 기술한다. 단순한 부정 관계와 구별한다.

출발점: 반대말처럼 보이는 쌍도 관계가 다르다. 아래 예문에서 ① 둘 사이에 중간 상태가 가능한가, ② 한쪽을 부정하면 다른 쪽이 반드시 참인가, ③ 같은 관계를 참여자 방향만 바꾸어 말하는가를 차례로 확인한다.

This suitcase is not expensive. This applicant was not present at the roll call. The studio employs Mina. / Mina is employed by the studio.
반대 관계: 같은 판단 질문으로 비교
유형예와 판단 조건
Gradable① Gradable: not expensive가 반드시 cheap을 뜻하지 않는다. 중간 가격대일 수 있다. 부정했을 때 반대말이 필연적으로 참인지 묻는다.
Complementary② Complementary: 출석을 present/absent로만 기록하는 정해진 상황에서는 not present이면 absent다. 이 domain과 시점을 고정해야 한다. 비유적 ‘very dead’ 같은 표현만 보고 literal binary opposition을 부정하지 않는다.
Converse③ Converse: employer/employee는 동일 관계에서 참여자들의 자리를 바꾸어 기술한다. A employs B를 B employs A로 바꾸는 것이 아니라 B is A’s employee로 바꾸어야 한다.

Synonymy 확인: a big suitcase / a large suitcase에서는 교체가 쉽지만 a big mistake의 big을 large로 바꾼 표현은 같은 정도로 관용적이지 않다. Sense의 유사성과 모든 collocation에서의 교체 가능성을 분리한다.

Relational opposites는 같은 관계를 참여자 방향을 바꾸어 표현한다. A is B’s trainer와 B is A’s trainee는 같은 훈련 관계다.

Hyponymy — inclusion of sense (kind-of)
Hyponymy is inclusion of sense (a kind-of relation). A superordinate (= hypernym) term includes more specific hyponyms; hyponyms at the same level are cohyponyms. A hyponym entails its superordinate, but not vice versa.

superordinate(=hypernym)가 더 구체적인 hyponym들을 포함하고, 같은 분류 단계에 속하는 단어들은 cohyponym이다.

방향 고정: hyponym은 superordinate를 entail한다 (I planted tulips ⊨ I planted flowers).

Meronymy vs Prototype
Meronymy (part–whole)
meronym = holonym의 부분page–book, engine–car, petal–flower (part–whole)hyponymy(종류)와 구분: wheel은 car의 부분이지 종류가 아님
Prototype
범주의 가장 전형적·중심 멤버범주 내 typicality가 graded(전형성의 정도)robin/sparrow가 bird의 prototype에 가깝고 penguin/ostrich는 주변적
📝 적용 연습 (Lexical Relations – Hyponymy)

hyponymy 방향성은 positive existential 문장에서 hyponym → superordinate이고, 역은 성립하지 않는다. 부분–전체(meronymy)와 종류 관계(hyponymy) 혼동이 전형적 함정.

자세히 보기 · 포함 관계와 문장 entailment: 부정에서 방향 확인

원서 읽기

Thus red is a hyponym of color, and lion is a hyponym of feline; or equivalently, color has the hyponym red and feline has the hyponym lion.

출처: Fromkin, V., Rodman, R., & Hyams, N. (2014). An Introduction to Language, 10th ed., p. 158. 발췌; 밑줄 추가.

해설 · hyponym에서 hypernym으로 가는 긍정 entailment와, 부정문에서 뒤집히는 방향을 구별한다.

출발점: 단어가 적용되는 대상들의 집합을 denotation이라고 한다. Tulip인 대상은 모두 flower이지만, flower 중에는 tulip이 아닌 것도 있다. 이 포함 관계를 문장에 넣을 때에는 긍정인지 부정인지까지 보아야 추론 방향을 정할 수 있다.

p: Iris bought a tulip. → q: Iris bought a flower.q ↛ p: Iris bought a daisy instead.Iris bought no flowers. → Iris bought no tulips.

That is a pedal에서 That is a bicycle이 따라오지 않는다. Part–whole을 subset 관계로 읽지 않는다.

Prototype: 어떤 학습자에게 sparrow가 penguin보다 bird의 전형적 예여도 penguin이 bird라는 소속 자체가 약해지는 것은 아니다. Typicality의 정도와 category membership의 참·거짓을 분리한다. 전형성은 경험·문화에 따라서도 달라질 수 있다.

🔤 ④ Homonymy & Polysemy (· homophone · homograph) 무관 vs 관련 의미 ▼
Homonymy vs Polysemy
Homonymy
한 word-form, 무관한(unrelated) 둘 이상의 의미사전에서 흔히 별도 entry로 구별bank '강가' / '은행'bark '나무껍질' / '개 짖는 소리'
Polysemy
한 word-form, 관련된(related) 여러 의미사전에서 흔히 관련 sense로 묶음head '신체' / '리더' / '윗부분'mouth '사람의 입' / '강어귀'
판별 기준: 두 의미가 관련되면 polysemy, 무관하면 homonymy. 품사 차이만으로 판정하지 않는다.

예: bright '영리한' / '빛나는'은 의미가 관련되므로 polysemy(homonymy 아님). the foot of the mountain의 foot도 신체 foot과 관련된 polysemy.

Homophone vs Homograph
Homophone (같은 발음)
same sound, 서로 다른 의미 — 철자는 다를 수도 있음flour/flower, night/knight, sea/see
Homograph (같은 철자)
same spelling, 다른 소리/의미일 수 있음lead /liːd/ '이끌다' / lead /lɛd/ '납'tear /tɪər/ '눈물' / tear /tɛər/ '찢다'

원서 읽기

For example, the word diamond referring to a jewel and also to a baseball field is polysemous. Many words in English are polysemous and have several separated entries in dictionaries owing to their diverse meanings.

출처: Fromkin, V., Rodman, R., & Hyams, N. (2014). An Introduction to Language, 10th ed., p. 158. 발췌; 밑줄 추가.

해설 · 여기서 jewel/야구장은 관련된 의미인 polysemy 사례다. 이 원서는 homonym을 homophone까지 포괄해 쓰므로 위 표의 좁은 분류와 용어 범위를 구별한다.

출발점: 먼저 비교할 두 용법을 고른다. Homonymy/polysemy는 뜻이 어떻게 연결되는지 묻고, homophone/homograph는 소리나 철자가 같은지 묻는다. 한 쌍을 이 두 기준으로 동시에 설명해도 모순이 아니다.

의미 축: the bark of an oak / the bark of a terrier는 무관한 lexical meanings를 대비한다. the mouth of a child / the mouth of a cave는 opening이라는 연결을 통해 관련 senses를 설명할 수 있다.

Sentence p entails q iff whenever p is true, q must be true; and whenever q is false, p must be false. (Entailment alone does not determine q when p is false.) Entailment is given by linguistic structure — lexical (hyponymy) or syntactic (active/passive).

entailment(함의)는 p가 참이면 q가 반드시 참, q가 거짓이면 p가 반드시 거짓인 관계다. p가 거짓이면 q는 미정이다.

one-way: Tom assassinated the senator ⊨ The senator died (assassinate가 die를 포함). 역은 성립 안 함.

paraphrase = mutual entailment: 같은 참여자·시제·해석을 유지한 아래 능동/수동쌍은 서로를 entail한다 — The committee approved the plan ⟺ The plan was approved by the committee.

Presupposition (전제) — constancy under negation
Presupposition is a background assumption a speaker takes as already true. Diagnostic — constancy under negation: the background normally persists under ordinary negation; this is a diagnostic, not a universal mechanical test.

presupposition(전제)는 화자가 이미 참이라고 전제하는 배경이며, 보통 부정해도 유지되는지로 진단한다: My car is a wreck / My car is not a wreck → 둘 다 I have a car를 presuppose.

함정: ordinary negation은 보통 presupposition 자체를 부정하지 않는다. 배경을 직접 거부하는 발화와 구별한다.

Presupposition triggers: definite expression, factive predicate(regret, realize, be aware), change-of-state predicate(stop), iterative(again) 등. manage to의 complement truth는 별도로 entailment를 검사한다.

Truth conditions와 background 비교
관계p가 참 → qp를 부정 → q대표 예
Entailmentq 참이 예에서 q는 미정Mary sings arias beautifully ⊨ Mary sings arias
Presuppositionq를 배경으로 전제보통 q를 계속 전제John lost the wallet again ≫ John had lost it before

핵심 변별: entailment는 p가 참이고 q가 거짓인 반례가 가능한지 검사한다. Presupposition은 trigger와 배경 가정의 유지 여부를 함께 확인한다. 부정에서 유지되는 추론을 모두 presupposition으로 분류하지 않는다.

Implicature note ※ 표준, Pragmatics 소관 — 대비만

Conversational implicature는 취소 가능한(cancellable) 추론(Grice)으로, 취소 불가능한 entailment와 대비된다. Some students passed는 'not all'을 implicate하지만 취소 가능하다(in fact, all did).

📝 적용 연습 (Semantics – Truth Condition – Entailment & Presupposition)

두 문장쌍의 의미 관계를 truth-table 기준으로 판별·설명: 1a T→1b T / 1b F→1a F = entailment; 2a를 부정해도 2b 유지 = presupposition.

자세히 보기 · 반례, 부정, 취소로 세 가지 추론 비교하기

원서 읽기

Generally, entailment goes only in one direction. So while the sentence Jack swims beautifully entails Jack swims, the reverse is not true. Knowing merely that Jack swims is true does not necessitate the truth of Jack swims beautifully. Jack could be a poor swimmer. On the other hand, negating both sentences reverses the entailment. Jack doesn’t swim entails Jack doesn’t swim beautifully.

출처: Fromkin, V., Rodman, R., & Hyams, N. (2014). An Introduction to Language, 10th ed., p. 142.

A: Dana repaired a violin. → Dana repaired an instrument.B: Dana regrets losing the ticket. → Dana lost the ticket.C: Some of the tickets were sold. ⇢ Not all of the tickets were sold.

A — Entailment: violin을 수리했는데 instrument는 전혀 수리하지 않았다는 상황은 같은 literal meaning을 유지하면 불가능하다. 반대로 instrument를 수리했지만 violin은 수리하지 않은 상황은 가능하다(piano 수리). Dana did not repair a violin에서는 instrument를 수리했는지 미정이다.

B — Presupposition: Dana does not regret losing the ticket도 ordinary reading에서는 ticket을 잃었다는 배경을 유지한다. 주된 assertion은 regret 여부다. 배경이 사실이 아니라고 직접 지적하면 원래 발화의 적절성을 문제 삼는 것이지, regret 여부만 부정하는 것이 아니다.

C — Conversational implicature: some의 기본 ‘at least some’ reading은 all과 양립한다. Some were sold; in fact, all were.은 not all 추론을 취소한다. 하지만 Some were sold, but none were sold는 같은 ticket 집합과 시점을 기준으로 하면 모순이다. 취소되는 것은 some의 truth-conditional content가 아니라 추가 추론이다.

Implicative와 factive 비교: Ravi managed to unlock the gate는 실제로 열었다는 결과를 entail한다. Ravi did not manage to unlock the gate에서는 그 시도에 성공했다는 내용이 유지되지 않는다. Ravi regrets unlocking the gate는 regret을 부정해도 여는 사건을 배경으로 둔다. 따라서 manage를 보았다는 이유로 complement를 presupposition이라고 쓰면 안 된다.

직접 만든 변형 · 거짓인 출발 문장에서 무엇을 알 수 있을까?

Mina bought a rose를 p, Mina bought a flower를 q로 두자.

p: Mina bought a red bicycle.q: Mina bought a bicycle.

같은 구매 사건을 비교하면 p → q는 성립하지만, q → p는 성립하지 않는다. 빨간 자전거 대신 파란 자전거를 산 상황은 q가 참이고 p가 거짓인 반례다. 이것이 one-way entailment다.

Mutual entailment는 양방향을 모두 만족한다. 2025 B01의 not connected/disconnected는 연결되지 않은 상태를 표현하는 reading에서 서로를 entail한다. 앞의 ‘p가 거짓이면 q는 미정’은 p → q라는 한 방향만 주어졌을 때의 요약이다. q → p도 성립하면 p가 거짓일 때 q도 거짓이다.

🌗 ⑥ Ambiguity — lexical vs structural 단어 의미 vs 구조 ▼
Lexical vs Structural Ambiguity
Lexical ambiguity
한 단어가 여러 sense(homonymy/polysemy) → 문장 중의She went to the bank. (강가 / 은행)The pitcher was full. (주전자 / 투수)
Structural (syntactic) ambiguity
같은 단어열에 구성 구조(트리)가 둘 이상The boy saw the man with a telescope. (PP attachment)Every student read a book. — scope ambiguity는 아래에서 별도로 비교

변별: 트리가 둘로 갈리면 structural, 단어 하나의 의미가 갈리면 lexical. 두 차이는 함께 나타날 수도 있다. He saw her duck에서는 duck의 명사·동사 해석에 따라 her의 기능과 문장 구조도 달라진다.

작은 화면에서는 그림을 좌우로 밀어 볼 수 있어요.

Structural ambiguity: "old men and women" — 두 bracketing(구조) Reading A — 모두 늙음 [ old [ men and women ] ] NP old NP men and women old이 [men and women] 전체를 수식 → 남녀 모두 늙음 Reading B — men만 old의 수식 범위 [ [ old men ] and women ] NP NP and women old men old이 [men]만 수식 → men은 늙음; women의 나이는 미정
Disambiguation tests (PP attachment)

두 reading을 먼저 paraphrase하고 PP가 NP 내부인지 VP에 붙는지 표시한다. Substitution·passivization·movement는 특정 reading을 뒷받침할 수 있지만 모든 예문을 자동으로 판별하는 절차는 아니다.

실제 기출 · 2018 전공 A 9번 18

2018 A-9 원문과 발문 보기 · 핵심 문장: Mary refused to visit every city that Tom visited.

발문은 두 가지 의미와 그 차이를 만드는 scope interaction을 모두 요구한다. 지문은 먼저 every와 a, 다음으로 every/all과 not의 순서를 비교한다. 마지막 문장에서는 눈에 보이는 not 대신 거부를 나타내는 refused를 찾아야 한다.

1. 먼저 대상의 범위를 고정한다. 설명을 위해 Tom이 방문한 도시가 A, B, C 세 곳뿐이라고 하자. that Tom visited는 비교할 도시 집합을 정한다.

On one reading, for each city that Tom visited, Mary refused to visit that city. Here, “every city” has wide scope over “refused.”On the other reading, Mary refused to visit the complete set of cities that Tom visited; this does not require her to refuse each individual visit. Here, “refused” has wide scope over “every city.”

An Introduction to Language, Ch.4는 refuse에 negative meaning이 있음을 설명하며 “intend not to”라는 분석을 제시한다. 이 설명도 실제 방문 완료를 보고하는 문장과 거부·의도 내용을 구별하는 데 도움이 된다. 이를 근거로 refused를 언제나 단순한 did not과 같은 뜻이라고 놓지는 않는다.

not all과의 연결에도 한계가 있다. 순수한 방문 결과를 말하는 Mary did not visit all three cities는 ‘세 곳 전부 방문’이 거짓이라는 뜻이다. 두 곳만 방문한 경우뿐 아니라 한 곳도 방문하지 않은 경우에도 참이다. 따라서 not all → some visited는 성립하지 않는다. 원문의 refused도 단순히 ‘방문하지 않았다’로 바꾸지 말고 거부한 내용을 유지한다.

직접 만든 변형 · 대상과 행동만 바꾸어 풀기

Nora refused to review every report that Eli submitted.

Nora refused to review the complete set of reports, so “refused” has wide scope over “every report.” This does not tell us how many reports she actually reviewed.

조건 하나 바꾸기: R1·R2·R3 각각의 검토도 모두 거부했다고 바꾸면 every > refused reading도 성립한다. 실제 검토 여부는 여전히 별도의 문제다.

다른 ambiguity와 비교: Leah photographed the visitor with a camera에서 [the visitor with a camera]는 camera를 가진 visitor를 정한다(NP attachment). [photographed the visitor] [with a camera]는 촬영 수단을 말한다(VP attachment). 이 경우에는 PP가 어느 constituent에 붙는지가 다르다. A-9의 답안에서는 이 PP 분석을 가져오기보다 every와 refused의 relative scope를 설명한다.

Every researcher consulted a librarian.

P의 phrasal coordination은 한 report가 first이면서 longest라고 말한다.

Core Definition
Each argument of a predicate bears a thematic role (theta-role), used to describe its semantic relation to the predicate. Roles describe meaning and are not identical to surface grammatical functions (subject/object).

role은 의미로 부여되며 subject/object 같은 grammatical function과 독립적이다 — 아래 두 문장을 비교하면 같은 참여자의 role이 유지된다. 그렇다고 role과 syntax 사이에 아무 관련도 없다는 뜻은 아니다.

broke the window에서 John=Agent, a hammer=Instrument — 같은 subject 자리라도 role이 다르다.

Role 목록
Agent
행위 주체(instigator)John broke the window.
Theme (여기서는 affected entity도 포함)
영향 받는·겪는 대상John broke the window; Mary fell.
Experiencer
심리 상태 경험자John was happy.
Instrument
수단John wounded Harry with a knife.
Goal
도착점John passed the book to Mary.
Source
출발점John returned from Paris.
Benefactive
수혜자John bought flowers for Mary.
Location (Locative)
장소John hid the letter under the bed.
예문 — role 배정
The chef(Agent) sliced the onion(Theme) with a cleaver(Instrument). Maria(Agent) sent a parcel(Theme) to her cousin(Goal) from Madrid(Source). The toddler(Experiencer) feared the dog. — 심리 상태이므로 Agent 아님. 독립성: The vase broke(the vase=Theme, subject) vs The cat broke the vase(the vase=Theme, object) — 위치가 달라도 Theme 유지.
📝 적용 연습 (Syntax – Theta Theory – Thematic Relations & Theta Roles)

argument들의 thematic role을 식별하고, role이 grammatical function과 독립적임을 설명(같은 NP가 위치 바뀌어도 Theme 유지; Theme vs Instrument 변별).

원서 읽기

Relations such as agent and theme are called thematic roles. Thematic roles express the kind of relation that holds between the arguments of the verb and the type of situation that the verb describes.

출처: Fromkin, V., Rodman, R., & Hyams, N. (2014). An Introduction to Language, 10th ed., p. 163.

The courier carried the parcel to the office with a trolley. The parcel was carried to the office by the courier with a trolley.

도출: 누가 운반했는가 → courier=Agent. 무엇이 이동했는가 → parcel=Theme. 어디가 도착점인가 → office=Goal. 무엇을 수단으로 사용했는가 → trolley=Instrument. Passive에서 parcel이 subject가 되어도 이 의미 관계는 유지된다.

대조: Elena feared the noise의 subject는 심리 상태를 겪는 Experiencer다. Subject라는 기능만 보고 Agent를 배정하지 않는다. 반대로 preposition 하나만 보고 role을 정하지도 않는다. to the office의 이동 도착점은 Goal이지만 모든 to-phrase가 Goal인 것은 아니다.

직접 만든 변형 · 같은 subject, 다른 역할

The courier feared the storm.

🧬 ⑧ Componential Analysis & Truth Conditions semantic feature · analytic/synthetic ▼
Componential Analysis — semantic features
Componential analysis decomposes word meaning into binary semantic features ([±feature]). Words can be distinguished by the value of a single feature.
[±human][±adult][±male]
man+human+adult+male
woman+human+adult−male
boy+human−adult+male
girl+human−adult−male

위의 단순화한 feature matrix에서 man과 boy는 오직 [±adult] 자질 값에서만 차이가 난다.

Selectional restriction: predicate와 argument 사이의 의미상 적합성 조건 — The rock regretted leaving은 literal reading에서 심리 상태를 경험할 주체가 맞지 않아 semantically anomalous하다. 이것을 곧바로 syntactic ungrammaticality와 같다고 보지 않는다.

stallion = [+horse, +male, +adult]; mare = [+horse, −male, +adult]; foal = [+horse, −adult]. The idea slept furiously. — literal reading에서 sleep과 inanimate subject가 충돌하는 semantic anomaly. Metaphorical reading은 별도.
Truth conditions ※ proposition·contradiction·tautology는 표준 도입

Proposition은 평서문의 의미 내용(참·거짓의 대상)이고, 문장 의미는 truth conditions(참이 되는 조건)로 모형화된다.

Analytic sentence
단어 의미만으로 필연적 참A triangle has three sides.A bachelor is unmarried.
Synthetic sentence
세계 상태에 따라 참·거짓The senator owns a yacht.
Contradiction
필연적 거짓My unmarried sister is married.
Tautology
필연적·trivial 참Either it is raining or it is not.

원서 읽기

Their truth is guaranteed solely by the meaning of their parts and the way they are put together. Similarly, some sentences are always false. These are called contradictions. Examples of contradictions are sentences like Circles are square or A bachelor is married.

출처: Fromkin, V., Rodman, R., & Hyams, N. (2014). An Introduction to Language, 10th ed., p. 141. 발췌; 밑줄 추가.

해설 · 원문의 Their는 앞서 든 Circles are round와 A person who is single is not married 같은 tautology를 가리킨다. 단지 현실에서 거짓인 문장과 contradiction을 구별한다.

출발점: 이 표의 +는 선택한 의미에 해당 feature가 있다는 표시이고, −는 없다는 표시다. 먼저 두 행에서 값이 달라지는 열을 찾는다. 문장의 truth를 판단할 때에는 별도로 단어 뜻만으로 결정되는지, 실제 상황을 확인해야 하는지 묻는다.

Feature 분석: 위 man/woman/boy/girl 표는 선택한 lexical senses를 [human], [adult], [male]의 세 축으로 단순화한 연습이다. 그 표에서 man/boy는 adult 값만 다르지만, 이것이 모든 용법·connotation·사람의 정체성을 완전히 기술하는 분석이라는 뜻은 아니다.

All triangles have three sides. — analyticThe envelope contains three photographs. — syntheticThe same envelope is empty and contains a photograph at the same time. — contradiction

판별: 첫 문장은 triangle의 정해진 의미로 참이다. 둘째는 envelope 안을 확인해야 하며 실제로 참이어도 analytic으로 바뀌지 않는다. 셋째는 같은 대상·시점·empty의 literal reading을 유지하면 동시에 참일 수 없다. 단순히 사실과 다른 synthetic sentence와 항상 거짓인 contradiction을 구분한다.

Compositionality: 보통 문장 의미는 단어 의미와 결합 구조에 따라 구성된다. The printer swallowed the document는 literal animate reading에서는 selectional mismatch가 있지만 ‘종이가 기계 안에 걸림’이라는 metaphorical reading이 가능하다. Semantic anomaly를 syntactic ungrammaticality 표시 *와 자동으로 동일시하지 않는다. Idiom도 단어별 뜻의 합만으로 충분히 설명되지 않을 수 있다.

최종 점검: lexical sense를 고정했는가 → 문법 구조가 같은가 → 실제 세계 확인이 필요한가 → assertion과 추가 추론을 나누었는가를 순서대로 확인한다.
