C-command
C-command는 Binding Theory와 NPI 분석의 핵심 개념입니다. 두 NP 사이의 구조적 관계를 정의하며, 단순히 선행(precede)하는 것과는 다릅니다.
Node A c-commands node B if and only if
① A does not dominate B, and B does not dominate A
② Every branching node dominating A also dominates B
예: *I will ever forgive nobody for that.에서 nobody는 ever보다 뒤에 있으므로 precede하지 못합니다.
Radford의 이 문제에서 ever는 S의 immediate constituent입니다. Object NP nobody의 첫 branching node인 VP는 ever를 dominate하지 않으므로 c-command도 성립하지 않습니다.
선형 순서와 구조 관계는 별도로 확인하세요. 여기서의 ever 조건은 제시된 부정문과 구조에 적용합니다.
Binding Theory
Binding Theory는 anaphor(재귀대명사·상호대명사)와 pronoun(대명사)의 해석을 규제하는 이론입니다. 핵심은 Binding Domain 안에서 선행사(antecedent)와의 관계입니다.
Anaphor: reflexive pronoun(himself, themselves) + reciprocal(each other)
Pronoun: him, them, her, they 등 일반 대명사
Binding Domain: anaphor/pronoun에서 올라가서 만나는 최소 절(smallest clause containing antecedent)
C-command + Co-indexing: 선행사는 anaphor를 c-command하고 같은 index를 가져야 함
Principle A: Anaphors(+reciprocals) must be c-commanded by their antecedent,
be co-indexed, and be within their binding domain (locality constraint)
Principle B: Pronouns must not be c-commanded by their antecedent,
or not co-indexed, or not within their binding domain
Binding Theory의 핵심 예문들을 살펴봅시다. 문법성 판단의 이유를 항상 c-command + co-indexing + binding domain으로 설명해야 합니다.
✓ [John and Mary despise each other] — antecedent ✓, c-command ✓
✗ [John despises each other] — John은 단수 → each other와 number 불일치
✗ [I despise himself] — I는 1인칭 → himself와 person 불일치
✗ Each other are always arguing. — antecedent 없음
✗ Themselves are very happy. — antecedent 없음
특히 중요한 것은 Binding Domain 확장입니다. Anaphor의 binding domain 안에 potential antecedent가 없으면 domain이 상위 절로 확장됩니다.
The soldiers' behaviour might disgrace themselves.에서 The soldiers'는 behaviour의 소유격으로 NP 내부에 있어서 themselves를 c-command하지 못합니다. 따라서 비문입니다.
Anaphor의 binding domain 안에 potential antecedent가 없으면 domain이 상위 CP까지 확장된다.
예: John wants [there to be pictures of himself on the wall].
→ TP 안에 antecedent 없음 → domain 확장 → 문장 전체가 binding domain → John이 antecedent ✓
예: Mary said [that pictures of herself were embarrassing].
→ that절 내에 antecedent 없음 → domain 확장 → Mary가 antecedent ✓

The soldiers' behaviour might disgrace themselves.
→ The soldiers'는 behaviour의 소유격(genitive)으로 NP 내부에 있음
→ 트리에서 The soldiers'는 themselves를 c-command하지 못함 (precede O / c-command X)
→ Binding Principle A 위반 → 비문
③ John considers [himself to be the champion]: consider는 SOR(Subject-to-Object Raising) 동사 → himself가 boundary 밖으로 나와 새 binding domain에서 John이 antecedent → 정문
Binding domain = anaphor로부터 올라가서 만나는 최소 절(smallest clause containing antecedent)
이 domain 안에 antecedent가 없으면 domain이 상위 절로 확장됩니다.
예: John wants [there to be pictures of himself on the wall].
→ TP 안에 antecedent 없음 → CP까지 확장 → John(matrix subject)이 antecedent ✓
The men will shoot the arrows at each other.
The men will shoot the arrows at each other.는 구조적 중의성이 있습니다.
해석 1: each other = the men → 남자들이 서로에게 화살을 쏠 것이다
해석 2: each other = the arrows → 화살들이 서로를 향해 쏠 것이다
두 NP 모두 c-command 조건을 만족하므로 ambiguous.
NPI 'ever' & C-command
'Ever'는 Negative Polarity Item(NPI)입니다. 여기서는 부정문 안의 ever를 다룹니다. 단순히 부정어가 앞에 나오는 것으로는 부족하고, 반드시 c-command가 성립해야 합니다.
Ever is an Adverbial expression which occurs as an immediate constituent of S.
In negative sentences, ever must be preceded AND c-commanded by a negative constituent:
① a negative modal (wouldn't, won't, can't)
② a NP containing the negative determiner 'no' as one of its immediate constituents
✓ Nobody will ever forgive you. — Nobody = negative NP, c-command ✓
✓ I won't ever forgive you. — won't = negative modal, c-command ✓
✗ I will ever forgive nobody. — nobody: precede ✗, c-command ✗
✗ Someone who didn't like you would ever forgive you. — precede ✓, c-command ✗
마지막 비문이 중요합니다. Someone who didn't like you에서 'didn't'는 관계절 내부에 있어서 ever를 c-command하지 못합니다. Precede는 되지만 c-command는 안 됩니다.
| 예문 (No Frenchman) | Precede | C-command | 문법성 |
|---|---|---|---|
| No Frenchman ever would help an Englishman. | ✓ | ✓ | 정문 |
| No Frenchman would ever help an Englishman. | ✓ | ✓ | 정문 |
| No Frenchman would help an Englishman ever. | ✓ | ✓ | 정문 |
| Some Frenchman ever wouldn't help an Englishman. | ✗ | ✗ | 비문 |
| Some Frenchmen who don't like English people would ever help an Englishman. | ✓ | ✗ | 비문 |
마지막 행이 핵심: don't가 선행(precede)하지만 관계절 내부에 있어 ever를 c-command하지 못하므로 비문입니다. C-command는 구조적 관계임을 다시 확인합니다.

NPI 'ever'는 precede AND c-command 둘 다 필요합니다.
*I will ever forgive nobody for that. — nobody가 ever보다 뒤에 있어 precede ✗, c-command ✗ → 비문
*Someone who didn't like you would ever forgive you. — didn't: precede ✓, c-command ✗ → 비문
→ Precede만으로는 부족. 반드시 구조적 관계인 c-command도 필요.
Some Frenchman would ever help no Englishman.
→ no Englishman은 help의 Object NP입니다.
→ 트리에서 'no Englishman'은 ever보다 뒤에 있어 precede ✗
→ 설령 뒤에 ever를 쓴다 해도(Some Frenchman would help no Englishman ever) c-command ✗
→ 이 문제의 분석에서 ever는 S의 immediate constituent입니다. Object NP에서 처음 만나는 branching node VP는 ever를 dominate하지 않으므로 c-command도 성립하지 않습니다.
No Crossing Branches Constraint
📌 핵심 규칙
→ 수형도에서 두 가지(branch)는 서로 교차할 수 없다.
- 비연속 구성소(noncontinuous constituent)는 존재할 수 없다.
- VP-adverb(completely, entirely 등)는 VP의 immediate constituent여야 하므로, Phrasal Verb의 Particle 앞에 끼어들 수 없다.
- S-adverb(certainly, probably 등)는 S의 immediate constituent.
📎 예문 분석 — VP-adverb 위치
| 예문 | 판정 | 이유 |
|---|---|---|
| *Drunks would put completely off the customers. | ✗ | completely가 V[put]과 P[off] 사이에 위치 → V의 자손 off가 ADVP보다 뒤에 → Crossing 위반 |
| Drunks would put the customers off completely. | ✓ | completely가 VP 끝에 위치 → 교차 없음 |
| Drunks would completely put off the customers. | ✓ | completely가 V 앞에 위치 → 교차 없음 |
Particle · Preposition · Conjunction
📌 Particle vs Preposition
- Particle: Phrasal Verb의 구성 요소. V와 함께 복합동사처럼 기능하며, NP complement를 취해 PP를 구성하지 않는다.
- Preposition: NP complement를 취해 PP를 형성.
| 예문 | 분류 | 근거 |
|---|---|---|
| John rang up his mother. | Particle | [rang up] = Phrasal Verb. up은 PP 형성 안 함 |
| John walked up the stairs. | Preposition | up the stairs = PP (NP complement 있음) |
📌 Preposition vs Conjunction
- Preposition: NP complement 또는 Clause complement를 취함.
- Conjunction(접속사): Clause만 complement로 취함 — NP 불가.
- after, before, since, until: Preposition · Conjunction 두 범주 모두 가능.
- during, despite, alongside: Preposition 전용 — NP complement만 허용.
| 예문 | 판정 | 분석 |
|---|---|---|
| He waited until her departure. | ✓ | Preposition + NP |
| He waited until she arrived. | ✓ | Conjunction + Clause |
| *He waited until. | ✗ | complement 필수 — 없으면 비문 |
| He left during the party. | ✓ | Preposition + NP |
| *He left during the party was going on. | ✗ | during은 Clause complement 불가 |
Adjective vs Determiner
Adjective(형용사)와 Determiner(한정사)는 모두 명사 앞에 나타나지만, 통사적 행동이 완전히 다릅니다. 임용시험에서 자주 출제되는 구분입니다.
| 판별 기준 | Adjective | Determiner |
|---|---|---|
| Coordination 다른 범주와 등위접속 |
형용사끼리만 가능 tall and slim girl ✓ |
형용사와 등위접속 불가 *my and lazy son ✗ |
| 순서 명사 앞 위치 |
Determiner 뒤에 옴 the big bang ✓ |
항상 Adjective 앞 *big the bang ✗ |
| Very 수식 | very 수식 가능 very tall ✓ |
very 수식 불가 *very this ✗ |
| 비교급/최상급 | 가능 taller, tallest ✓ |
불가 *more the ✗ |
✗ *Big the bang — Adj가 Det 앞에 올 수 없음
✓ My red pen — Det(My) → Adj(red) → N(pen)
✗ *Red my pen — 순서 위반
✗ *My and lazy son — Det는 Adj와 coordination 불가
✗ *Silly and these ideas — Det는 Adj와 coordination 불가
Radford §3.6의 제시된 대조입니다. focus에 놓인 phrase 전체를 판별합니다.
| 예문 | focus category · 판정 |

| It was a car that she bought. | NP · ✓ |
| It was in the shop that I met her. | PP · ✓ |
| *It is very pretty that she is. | AP · ✗ |
| *It is very quickly that she writes. | ADVP · ✗ |
| *It is go home that I will. | VP · ✗ |
ㄱ. The big bang ㄴ. Big the bang ㄷ. My and lazy son ㄹ. Silly and these ideas
ㄴ. *Big the bang — Determiner는 반드시 Adjective 앞에 와야 함. 순서 위반 → 비문
ㄷ. *My and lazy son — Determiner(My)는 Adjective(lazy)와 coordination 불가 → 비문
ㄹ. *Silly and these ideas — Adjective(silly)와 Determiner(these)는 coordination 불가 → 비문
ㄱ. The big bang — Det(The) → Adj(big) → N(bang) 올바른 순서 → 정문
Cleft sentence focus position에는 NP와 PP만 올 수 있습니다.
It was a car that she bought. → NP ✓
It was in the shop that I met her. → PP ✓
*It is very pretty that she is. → AP ✗
*It is go home that I will. → VP ✗
Gerund vs Participle (Adjective/Verb)
✗ Max is (*very) charming a snake. → very 수식 불가 → 동사
✓ He made me a very tempting offer. → very 수식 가능 → 형용사
✗ He is (*very) tempting the child with chocolate. → very 수식 불가 → 동사
✓ Those noisy motorcycles are extremely annoying. → extremely 수식 → 형용사
특수 예외: very + -ed participle + by-phrase 가능한 경우가 있습니다. by-phrase의 NP가 사람이 아닌 원인/이유를 나타낼 때는 형용사 + by-phrase가 허용됩니다.
I'm very disturbed by your attitude. ✓
We were very pleased by his behavior. ✓
이 두 예문에서는 by-phrase의 nonpersonal NP가 원인·이유를 나타냅니다. 이를 모든 adjectival participle의 by-phrase에 대한 제한으로 일반화하지 마세요.
| 명사화(Nominalization) vs 동명사(Gerund) | 예문 | 해석 차이 |
|---|---|---|
| Gerund (동사적 성격) 행위 자체(factive) |
John enjoyed reading The Bald Soprano. | John 본인이 읽는 행위 |
| Nominalization (명사적 성격) 방식(manner) |
John enjoyed a reading of The Bald Soprano. | 다른 누군가가 읽는 것을 청취 |
| Gerund | Killing his dog upset John. | 이 비교에서는 John이 죽인 행위로 읽음 |
| Nominalization | The killing of his dog upset John. | 개가 죽임을 당한 사건 · 행위자는 별도 해석 |
The shooting of the hunters was awful.
두 해석 모두 Nominalization입니다. 달라지는 것은 the hunters의 의미 관계입니다.
| the hunters의 관계 | 해석 |
|---|---|
| Patient · 쏘는 대상 | 사냥꾼들을 쏜 사실이 끔찍했다. |
| Agent · 쏘는 주체 | 사냥꾼들이 쏘는 방식이 형편없었다. |
반면 Shooting the hunters was a tragic mistake.의 Gerund는 the hunters를 직접 Object로 취합니다. 이 대조에서 해석 차이와 단어의 category 차이를 동일시하지 마세요.
Those noisy motorcycles are extremely annoying.
→ extremely(=very)가 수식 가능 → 형용사 ✓
① charming a snake: very 수식 불가 (*very charming a snake) + 목적어(a snake) 동반 → 동사
③ feeding buns: 목적어(buns) 동반 → 동사
④ riding a bicycle: 목적어(a bicycle) 동반 → 동사
선택지의 ‘경향’에 주목하세요. 이 자료의 대조에서 Gerund는 행위가 일어난 사실(factive), Nominalization은 방식(manner)으로 읽히는 경우가 있습니다. 모든 용법에 강제되는 의미 규칙은 아닙니다.
John enjoyed reading The Bald Soprano.에서는 John이 읽는 행위로, John enjoyed a reading of The Bald Soprano.에서는 다른 사람의 낭독을 듣는 것으로 읽는 것이 이 비교의 기본 해석입니다.
이를 모든 Gerund의 생략된 subject가 반드시 같은 문장의 NP와 coreferential하다는 규칙으로 확대하지 마세요. Nominalization도 factive 해석을 가질 수 있습니다. 다음 hunters 예문의 두 해석을 함께 비교하세요.
The shooting of the hunters was awful.은 두 해석 모두 Nominalization입니다.
① the hunters = shooting의 Patient: 사냥꾼들을 쏜 사실이 끔찍했다.
② the hunters = shooting의 Agent: 사냥꾼들이 쏘는 방식이 형편없었다.
여기서 선택지 ④의 subject/object는 쏘는 주체/대상에 대응하는 해석을 가리킵니다. 실제 phrase 안에서 the hunters는 두 경우 모두 of의 Complement입니다.
Shooting the hunters was a tragic mistake.의 Gerund와, 위 Nominalization 안의 두 해석을 혼동하지 마세요.
