(a) I know [that they repair clocks]. (b) It would be useful [for her to repair the clock]. (c) I know [that they have repaired the clock]. (d) The committee insists [that Mira be present].
(a) finite / (b) nonfinite / (c) finite / (d) finite. (b)는 to-infinitive이고 repair에 finite Tense/Agreement가 없습니다. her라는 overt subject가 있어도 nonfinite일 수 있습니다.
(a) I believe [that Noa can repair the clock]. (b) It would be useful [for Noa to repair the clock]. (c) Noa wonders [whether to repair the clock].
이 문제는 C가 IP를 취하고 I가 Modal 또는 infinitival to를 담는 기능적 head 분석을 채택합니다. (a)–(c)의 that/for/whether와 can/to를 C 또는 I로 분류하고 각 embedded clause의 finiteness를 쓰세요. “C가 있으면 finite”라는 주장과 “(b)의 for와 to는 모두 C”라는 주장을 고치세요.
that / for / whether → C, can / infinitival to → I. (a)는 finite, (b)와 (c)는 nonfinite입니다. (b)의 for는 clause를 도입하는 C, to는 nonfinite I에 있으므로 둘은 같은 head가 아닙니다.
I …]] Radford Ch6 본문의 S → NP I VP, S′ → C S라는 flat 분석을 그대로 옮긴 도식은 아닙니다.
(a) Noa can repair the clock. (b) Should we buy a new one? (c) Noa can repair the clock, but should we buy a new one?
“(a)는 that이 없으므로 TP이고 (b)만 CP다”라는 답안도 교정하세요.
Both clauses are CPs: (a) has a null C, and (b) has should in C after subject–auxiliary inversion. They can therefore be conjoined under the question's category-matching assumption.
(a)의 TP는 null C 아래에 포함되고, (b)에서는 should가 T에서 C로 이동한 것으로 분석합니다.
(a) Mina hopes [to arrive early]. (b) It would be helpful [for her to arrive early]. (c) Mina believes [her to be reliable].
(a)는 [PRO to arrive early]이며 subject-control 분석에서 PRO는 Mina를 가리킵니다. (b)와 (c)의 embedded subject는 각각 발음되는 her입니다.
(b)의 for-infinitive는 objective 형태 her를 허용하므로 she로 바꿀 수 없습니다.
(a) It is likely [that Rina will return]. (b) *It is likely [Rina to return]. (c) Rina is likely [to return].
In (b), Rina lacks Case because likely cannot assign accusative Case and the nonfinite clause does not license nominative Case on its overt subject. In (c), Rina moves to the finite main-clause subject position, where it receives nominative Case.
(a) *It is believed Rina to have repaired the clock. (b) *It was told the visitors that the museum was closed.
(b)의 embedded clause는 that부터입니다. 이어 (a)를 It is believed that Rina has repaired the clock.
(a) Rina is believed to have repaired the clock. (b) The visitors were told that the museum was closed.
(b)의 finite that-clause도 유지되며, subject가 plural인 the visitors로 바뀌므로 was를 were로 맞춥니다.
