(a) Kay admired [the mural]. (b) *Kay smiled [the mural]. (c) Kay smiled [at the mural].
admire와 smile은 모두 V이지만, (a)의 Complement는 NP, (c)는 at이 head인 PP입니다. 해당 용법을 약식으로 쓰면 admire [— NP], smile [— PP(at …)]
(a) The pilot put the bag [beside the seat] [before noon]. (b) The pilot put the bag [beside the seat]. (c) *The pilot put the bag [before noon].
beside the seat는 위치 Complement, before noon은 시간 Adjunct입니다.[— NP PP]는 두 Complement인 the bag과 beside the seat를 표시합니다. subject the pilot까지 포함하는 ⟨Agent NP, Theme NP, Location PP⟩는 세 argument의 theta-grid입니다.
(a) [A mallet] shattered [the pane]. (b) Owen shattered [the pane] with [a mallet]. (c) [The pane] was shattered by Owen.
(a) a mallet: Subject / Instrument, the pane: Direct Object / Theme. (b) the pane: Direct Object / Theme, a mallet: P의 Complement / Instrument. (c) the pane: Subject / Theme. 같은 Instrument가 (a)에서는 Subject, (b)에서는 with의 Complement입니다. 같은 Theme가 (a)·(b)에서는 Direct Object, (c)에서는 Subject입니다.
(a) The technician happened to damage the cable. (b) The technician decided to damage the cable. (c) There happened to be two errors. (d) *There decided to be two errors.
(a) The technicianᵢ happened [tᵢ to damage the cable]. (b) The technicianᵢ decided [PROᵢ to damage the cable].
(d)의 expletive there는 decide가 요구하는 thematic subject가 될 수 없습니다.
(a) *The porter put the suitcase. (b) The letter [Øwhᵢ Eva filed tᵢ] was unsigned. (c) *The letter [Øwhᵢ Eva filed tᵢ it] was unsigned.
In (a), a required locative role has no argument to receive it. In (c), the additional pronoun has no available role because the object position is already linked to the relative operator.
